I both don’t like rooting for it, AND i think “higher draft picks automatically equals a better / more complete team” is only true in a vacuum, devoid of context. In order to support that train of thought, we must (unrealistically) assume every team has correctly ranked their draft boards and they all value players similarly.

But in practice that logic is overrated because every team’s draft board is different. There would be much more parity in the league and fewer teams that are just bad all the time if the “high draft picks” concept really was “true”, rather than just being a soft correlation.

Lots of teams get higher draft picks and take the wrong guy anyway, more options = more pressure to not make the wrong call so there’s a trade off there. And also lots of teams sit and bide their time and focus on value picks, and end up with better draft classes than teams that draft early. It really doesn’t work like that as much as people assume.

 

Yeah but accepting mediocrity is far worse than trying to actually improve your team.
