See, I think this just argues so strongly for taking a RB in the mid-late rounds every draft. The value on a guy who can run for 8-900+ yards a season and is getting paid <$1mil is SO, SO huge compared to paying $6mil/yr for a guy who's getting you maybe 1000yds/yr. That extra space is the 2 lineman you need for depth or the 2nd WR you need to free up loaded boxes. Or its the defensive lineman you need to not lose 5 minutes in time of possession and get forced into throwing more.

Im not sure there's a less essential position in the league than RB, and they 100% isnt a position less worth overpaying for. You're basically arguing the Lamar Miller deal is a model for what teams should do...

When is the last time an elite RB won a super bowl? Lynch and then who?

I’m arguing that the Lamar Miller deal is bullshit but the Todd Gurley deal is fine. There is a threshold here. You have to be “that good” that you demand defensive attention, in order to have talent rare enough to be worth resigning at that rate. Otherwise yes I agree, draft rinse and repeat.

But I think that cheap guy who gets you 800-900 yards is still not really helping your passing offense settle down, because teams can drop in cover 6 all day and pick off every route, or blitz 6-7 guys, knowing the worst that could happen is like an 8-12 yard run.

With a Gurley, they are risking a whole rushing touchdown every time they drop in a pass-stopping look. To me that is worth paying for. That has influence on your team beyond the stats and yardage numbers, it affects the strategy and tempo of the game being dictated.

Anyway keep it real everybody I don’t care at the end of the day if you all think I’m wrong.

I just think that certain RB are so good and affect the game so much, that rolling the dice on them being healthy enough, can be better odds than rolling the dice on finding that much help for your offense again.

Imo you spend money on the talent that sets your team apart and draft the rest. It’s on a case by case basis. If a RB is seriously a core player, they can be a core player. Just like TE aren’t usually important but some teams have one so good that they need to pay him as though he’s a leading WR.

Not every team is Pittsburgh and can go Jerome Bettis - Willie Parker - Rashard Mendenhall - Le’Veon Bell - James Conner and not skip a beat.

Yup. That's the way to do it. Alabama does that too. Clemson doesnt but they have the GOAT on their team at QB

Having a serviceable running back, and having a running back that defenses have to actively plan their game plan around stopping them before anything else, are very different and worth the money that it costs to have them on your team.

Those game changing RBs are not a dime a dozen. The serviceable ones are, but they aren’t going to elevate the passing game or anything like that. Which is why those dudes aren’t getting paid as well. That will all change when these younger dudes aren’t on cheap rookie contracts, and people start paying like crazy to keep their serviceable guys
