    Prestigious

I remember a time when all sports analysts were saying wrs would be playing rb and there would be no more run it up the middle plays

Here is every team that has either:
    a. drafted a prospect who has a lot of promise to be good
or b. signed a guy on an affordable deal

    Raiders - Josh Jacobs
    Chiefs - Kareem Hunt*
    Chargers - Melvin Gordon
    Broncos - Phillip Lindsay
    Browns - Nick Chubb
    Steelers - James Conner
    Bengals - Joe Mixon
    Ravens - Lamar Jackson
    Colts - Marlon Mack
    Jags - Leonard Fournette
    Titans - Derrick Henry
    Patriots - Sony Michel
    Dolphins - Kenyan Drake
    Vikings - Dalvin Cook
    Packers - Aaron Jones
    Bears - Tarik Cohen
    Lions - Kerryon Johnson
    Seahawks - Chris Carson
    Cardinals - David Johnson
    Giants - Saquon Barkley
    Cowboys - Ezekiel Elliott
    Eagles - Jordan Howard
    Redskins - Adrian Peterson
    Saints - Alvin Kamara
    Panthers - Christian McCaffrey
    Buccaneers - Peyton Barber

That leaves LAR, SF, (who we established are going to regret those contracts) ATL, BUF, HOU, and NYJ. 26/32 teams were able to find RBs that are at the very least "good enough". Hard to argue it's worth paying a guy when logic dictates that it's absurdly easy to find a cheaper replacement that will be just as good if not better than the guy wanting an extension will be for those middle years.

    * - if he wasn't a POS this would still be the case.

I also remember that brief period of time where people were saying the NFL was going back to power running. That was a fun couple months

Some of those aren’t even lead backs though? Barber sucks. Drake and Cohen need somebody else to run up the middle and can’t do it by themselves. Lindsey is sorta like that to a lesser extent. Howard is seriously questionable after being a total dud last season. AP is old and mostly bad. Chris Carson is bad but the hawks actually do RBBC well.

Lamar Jackson hahaha. I get the joke but still their best Actual RB is Gus Edwards who only played 4 games as a starter.

You still have a point because that’s still 18 teams that I can’t even argue they have a drafted or cheaply signed “good enough” back. But theres 14/32 teams that aren’t cutting it at RB in my opinion rather than 6/32.

Cohen is great. And they got Montgomery too, so that's two.

Eagles got Sanders also. And Clement. Their committee is strong.

    Drake and Ballage is good.

Lindsey and Freeman is also good.

Per Drake and Cohen retort - Thanks to the money they're saving not signing a different RB they can afford to have another guy to run it up the middle

Per Howard - Same premise hence them drafting Miles Sanders who we will see on

AP is still good esp for what he's being paid

    Chris Carson performed well

I'll be honest I didn't watch a single Peyton Barber game so I don't really know so I'll forfeit that one

We arent gonna get freak talent like we got in the late 90s and early 2000s but I do think that's partially because the average player now is much better than back then. That's especially true of RBs

I still think the context is a little skewed just because a LOT of great RB have come out recently, starting with Gurley and Gordon. I think that has created a coincidence that supports y’alls argument because yeah, right now almost every “great back” in the league has only been playing for a couple years.

But I call it a coincidence because the last time the league had a lot of RB talent, ALL those top guys were still great in their second contract. McCoy, AP, Foster, Gore, Forte, Lynch, MJD, Ricky Williams, Corey Dillon, Deuce McAllister, Fred Taylor, Tiki Barber, I could go on. All of them took till at least age 28-29 to decline.

I think that from Ronnie Brown to Todd Gurley there was a huge drought of RB talent where almost nobody that good was coming out of the draft (which is why now you don’t see a lot of 26-30 year old backs worth resigning) and then SINCE Gurley the RB position has proliferated so much that there’s now an UNUSUAL amount of young, cheap backs who are amazing.

Keep in mind that there's a lot of evidence that players today could be more injury prone than they were before (TB12 members excluded)

So while those past players might not have had bad second contracts that doesn't necessarily work against the guys now potentially having bad second contracts

    Trusted

Chris Carson plays like a man possessed. He is far from bad, but his play style requires a committee backfield for him to stay up right. It’s still laughable that the Seahawks wasted their first round pick last year on a RB only to not feature him

...because they're all more important positions. All of them. So why take 8% of your cap away from them!?

  18. MidDave

And again...because a B- pass rusher is a more important position that is harder to find.

Me and Matt just went through every draft 2009-2014 and the only backs I would’ve resigned after their first 4 years are Forte, McCoy, Bell, Martin and Murray.

Murray and Martin did not pan out, Forte & McCoy did, we will see on Bell. It’s an even split. But the main thing we agreed on is that there was a definite drought of RB talent for those 5 years. So that is why I think RBBC theory became much more popular and why I think that now that there’s 12 or 13 backs as good as Forte / McCoy right now, we should more seriously consider resigning the really good ones even if it’s a bit expensive.

I definitely don’t agree with that. A B- pass rusher is not harder to find than a top RB. There are tons of them every second and third round of most drafts. All a team has to do is prioritize the pass rush and it’s not hard to have one.

K i'm going home now. Have a good weekend ya'll. Keep dunking on Randall for me. Todd Gurley will account for $25 million in dead cap in 2020 if he's cut.

I think a strong committee = one elite guy. But it also requires great coaching to be able to know how to block for 3 different styles of running. Pete Carroll, Doug Pederson, and Bill Belicheck are fantastic at doing that. Aside from them, who really actually does RBBC well?

The Saints, lately, but that was short lived because Ingram got overshadowed by Kamara and the Saints actually perform BETTER when they mostly just use Kamara

Todd Gurley will also account for a good 60-70% of the Rams victories if he’s healthy so. Sometimes that’s a risk you take. This is his first injury scare since college, so I don’t treat his situation the same way I look at Fournette who has basically never not been banged up.
