NFL's top 10 most expensive RBs:

    1. Todd Gurley: replaced by CJ Anderson after injury
    2. Le’Veon Bell: has missed several games due to injuries/suspension
    3. Devonta Freeman: missed 16 of last 32 games with injury
    4. LeSean McCoy: avg'd 3.7 YPC last 2 years
    5. David Johnson: missed 15 of last 32 games with injury
    6. Saquon Barkley: rookie contract
    7. Jerick McKinnon: missed entire first season on new, expensive contract with torn ACL
    8. Leonard Fournette: rookie contract, several low body injuries in college/NFL
    9. Lamar Miller: blows
    10. Ezekiel Elliott: rookie contract

    Honorable mention:
    11. Dion Lewis: need I say more?

Other RBs on rookie deals who have struggled with injuries thus far, some much more than others:

    Aaron Jones
    Dalvin Cook
    Kerryon Johnson
    Chris Carson
    Sony Michel
    James Conner
    Marlon Mack
    Melvin Gordon
    Phillip Lindsay

I think running backs get hurt a lot compared to any other position, probably because they touch the ball more than any position not named QB and spend most of their time running straight into ten big linemen. Not sure though.

You keep changing the argument from "do Running Backs hold up long enough for their second contract to be a good investment" to "are Running Backs important." I don't know why. Yeah, having a good running game certainly helps. No one is gonna tell you it doesn't. The question is always "can you have a good running game without devoting $14/million to a guy" and the answer has been shown time and time again that the answer is yes.

The reason why running less or using RBBC works for the Pats and Saints is because Brady and Brees are so good that they still go 300 yards / 2 TDs even when the opponent is dropping 8 guys into coverage and not respecting the run at all. That is RARE and not a reality for the majority of NFL teams.

In a vacuum it’s not a great idea to invest a lot into running backs. But I agree with Randall, it can completely depend on your situation.

The answer is NOT “yes” for all 32 teams. That answer is only yes for teams with excellent QBs and/or teams that REPEATEDLY scout well (i.e. didn’t just get lucky and draft the right RB once). That’s only a handful of teams in the league that fit that criteria.

You act like only the Patriots and Saints use cheap running backs or have good QBs.

Also worth mentioning is that the Chargers went 3-1, averaged 25 points/game and 5.6 yards/play on offense in the four games Gordon missed last year. Beat the Steelers and Chiefs both on the road in primetime without Gordon

I’d also like to mention that if you watched that game I’m not sure how much running backs had to do with it lol. In the words of Jim Mora, “we gave them the frickin’ game. In my opinion that sucked”

The Eagles won a super bowl with Nick Foles and a RBBC

To be fair though the Chiefs and Steelers are two of the easiest defenses to attack through the air.

To be fair also the Chargers have Rivers. Most running teams are running teams because they don’t have a Rivers.

There aren't really many running teams anymore.

Most running teams are running teams because they devote assets to things they shouldn't be...like running backs.

Side note, that chargers Steelers game I fell asleep right before the second half and woke up and saw the final like “what the fuck”

I mean y’all can all create a consensus about this now if that’s what you wanna do but I’m gonna laugh looking back at this when 27-28 year old CMC and Kamara and 30 year old Bell are still kicking ass and helping their teams compete

Remember when Kareem Hunt was so good for the Chiefs and then career backup Damien Williams replaces him and was on fire down the stretch? Me too

Seattle is a running team. They have Russell Wilson. New England has Brady. Houston has Watson. NOLA has Brees.

The idea that no running backs are EVER worth resigning is based in the context that no runningbacks for a little while were worth resigning. There was an obvious dip in RB talent. Before Gurley, who were the big name runningbacks? Older backs like AP and McCoy and Arian Foster and MJD. Teams were drafting shitters like Tre Mason and Trent Richardson early for awhile. So yeah. The 2008-2013 RB draft classes (roughly) were not worth resigning.

THATS the clear outlier, @CarpetElf. The typical trend is that a lot of 25-29 year old backs are usually good.

It's based in the context that teams can and do frequently find replacements.

If I have faith in any RB mentioned playing well when they’re older it’s Kamara due to the drastic difference in touches he’s received compared to workhorses around the league
