The salary cap keeps going up and pretty soon any player can earn $14M AAV by being great regardless of position (except K and P).

RB are paid like a less important position already. They are already paid like, a WR salary minus 3 or 4 game checks. The injury is already factored in when teams resign their RB. That’s what I’m saying.

Are the Chargers a run first team? No, they are not.

Hines Ward was one of my favorite WRs growing up although as a kid I didn't quite understand "oh these people are actually getting hurt"

    The rivalry is back on

Here’s the highest earning RBs in 2013 just as an arbitrary point far enough away that we have answers on some big RB extensions

Good deal: Forte (assuming Matt Forte production is worth paying for, he was consistent during his extension), Frank Gore (ditto) Marshawn Lynch (probably the best ROI of any of these guys)

Mixed bag: Peterson (had one out of this world season and two very good ones, but also missed 2.5 of the 6 year contract due to injuries), Arian Foster (one very good year, one pretty good year, two years lost to injury, cut by the end of the contract)

Bad: Chris Johnson (lol), Darren McFadden (maybe not worth the money anyways), Ray Rice (even for football reasons), Maurice Jones-Drew (one good season, 1 bad season, 2 mostly lost to injuries)

Not bad, but also like a 50/50 chance of being successful. Without looking to confirm, I’d imagine major extensions for elite players at other positions hit at a higher rate

Yeah Ben and Pouncey were/are the only Steelers I can think of that I don't like

I just feel like football discussion is a lot of arguing whether the egg or the chicken came first when that’s not even the point. (And the running game came first anyway so even in that light I’m still not wrong.)

The running game and passing game affect and depend on each other so much that they are BOTH necessary. The egg needs a chicken to lay it; the chicken must come from an egg. I don’t agree with any philosophy that undermines the fact that passing gets easier, when you have ONE RB who can get all kinds of yards and attract several defenders’ attention by himself. In terms of matchups that takes players away from coverage and creates a lot more one - on - ones.

That’s just obvious to me - you find a way to take defenders eyes off the QB? Then it’s easier to pass! Such an incredibly simple and obvious concept that I don’t get why there’s all this backlash.

The fact is, any old RBBC does not automatically have that effect on the strategy of the game. A RB worth resigning, to me, is one that is *good enough* to bend the opponent’s game plan toward stopping them, to the point where teams are leaving themselves more vulnerable to downfield throws. That’s where RB have super valuable talent that’s worth weighing against their higher injury risks. Even if they miss a few games, having that effect on your offense for most of the season has a dramatic impact on how well the team does.
