My football opinions stay pretty consistent, not sure why you keep making comments like this. I can either be stubborn or I can be wishy washy, those things contradict each other, I can't be both.

The times when my opinion does a 180 (examples: Baker Mayfield, Dave Caldwell, Leonard Fournette's injuries) I do admit that I was wrong before.

If that happened I would still say I didn't like the Fowler trade. We traded a young, pretty good pass rusher. That tends to be a high commodity in the NFL so a LATE third round pick just isn't that satisfying. You can salvage the fallout/ results of a bad decision, but that doesn't make it a good decision. That would just be us buying low on Green after we sold low on Fowler, in that scenario both the Jags AND the Bengals are dumb.

The Office had no idea how to write Andy Bernard sometime around season five. He went from being a preppy douche to Michael Scott-lite. Also he went sailing around the world by himself for some reason? (I know he was shooting the Hangover 6 or something but that’s such a zany, crazy premise in a show that was supposed to be a low-key workplace mockumentary)

Like, that show went from the subtle, subdued flirtations of Jim and Pam, built in charming performances, to a love triangle between Dwight, Andy, and Angela, three of the most specifically unrelatable and broad characters on the show, and then they went into, what, Erin/Gabe/Andy/Jake Lacy (I don’t remember his character’s name)? That show thought it needed an emotional throughline because Jim and Pam worked so well and people responded to it but it just bogged down episodes as they tried to walk the line of earnest emotion and broad comedy. Like most sitcoms that run past 5-6 seasons, they just had their ensemble keep sleeping with each other in different combinations, and it never works or leads to something genuinely interesting

Not a lot of my posts have been football related. I think my last post in here even relating to sports was about Barry Bonds. To at least attempt to be on-topic, I was texting my brother today about the first time we felt jaded and cynical about the Lions, because when you’re a kid you just watch every game and earnestly believe your team has a shot to win every game. So when did we first learn that, as Lions fans, that wasn’t the case?

It was 2001. I was 10. The 0-2 Lions played the 3-0 Rams on Monday Night Football. At 10 years old I was like “there’s no point watching this, I have school tomorrow”. We lost 35-0. Kurt Warner completed 78% of his passes with 3 touchdowns. Ty Detmer and Charlie Batch combined for 34 pass attempts and an interception each.

I definitely agree with @Nathan that the romance of the show only worked with Jim and Pam

Erin is the worst character in the show because everyone acts like a total fucking dunce trying to get her attention, and they just wrote her character lacking so much personality and independent thought that she just kinda smiles and goes along with it like a seal at Sea World. To me a boring character that never acts upset or put-off in the show, is worse than a cringy / awkward character.

Like, girls playing dumb to attract dumb guys is a pretty sexist concept and I get tired of that in TV shows cause that's not how it works IRL. Write more strong women who reject terrible advances and assert themselves in comedy shows.

I don’t think they were writing Erin as “playing” dumb, they wrote her as being genuinely dumb. Ellie Kemper deserved better (and has gotten it, good for her).

The writing on the Office got really bad and inconsistent in later seasons. There’s a difference between a character being unlikable but understandable and funny, and being unlikable and just written badly. Without looking at the episodes, I’d put the worst episode of the Office from seasons 1-3 as being better than any episode from s4 on.

For me as a Jags fan, that started early haha. My family had season tickets in Jax before moving to Maryland when I was 15. They were good until I was 10 years old.

The Jags dominant late 90s games happened when I was too young to understand or cherish those memories. I just grew up already used to my football team being good and kinda taking those wins for granted. Hence why I really get a lot of enjoyment out of watching old footage.

When I started playing Madden games and fantasy football & watching sports channels, old enough to understand the sport... THEN they started to suck and I sat through a lot of BAD games at that stadium. I was jaded and cynical already before we even fired Tom Coughlin lol.

Then 2005-2007 we bounced back and that's when I became a HUGE Jags /football fan. Cause they reminded me of home when I had just moved to Maryland, and playing football / talking about the NFL was how I made friends in my new town. If only I could go back in time and warn myself that the next 10 years would be even worse than the first time we sucked.

Sports misery is like nothing else.

I saw Barry Sanders live multiple times but was pretty young. I barely remember our late 90s success. I remember when Barry retired. Everyone was stunned. My dad was despondent. I was bummed but I was like, this is still my favorite team!

I learned quickly how much it sucks to root for a bad team. So I adopted a secondary team. I didn’t want to root for a team that was too good. I hated the Yankees and Lakers, at the time in football the Rams felt like the equivalent. My mom’s side of the family is from the northeast coast of the country. My favorite baseball player was Nomar Garciaparra, and a quarterback from my favorite college team was a backup who had stepped in and started leading another Boston team to the playoffs. So I decided I’d be a Patriots fan whenever the Lions weren’t competitive. It worked out really well in 2001-02 but I didn’t feel the same thing for them that I did for the Lions so I dropped it (while still wishing the Michigan alum at quarterback continued success, until I saw a red baseball hat in his locker).

it's weird how memories work haha. I saw Jimmy Smith live a lot of times. But the times I remember most were
    1) standing in line after a game to get player autographs, Jimmy walked past the whole crowd including me and only signed ONE thing, and I was so disappointed.
    2) Seeing him at the Pro Bowl in Hawaii when I lived there briefly (my dad was stationed to NAS JAX / MCB Hawaii / back to NAS Jax.) I was salty that Peyton Manning kept passing to Marvin Harrison and ignoring Jimmy Smith and then my children's summer camp left the game in the third quarter, so I missed his 9 catch, 3 TD performance in the second half.

So really I have zero memory of younger Jimmy Smith burning corners downfield and tipping the ball to himself on the sideline. It makes me sad. I hardly remember Keenan McCardell either except for a few leaping / big hit catches he made cause he was known for that. Back then, TV camera angles didn't show you much WR route running either, you only saw them catch it.

I definitely have vivid memories of Fred Taylor though.

My secondary team rotates every couple years depending on who I'm really digging watching. Developing an interest in all the NFL teams and talking with my friends about their teams was how I coped with my sports misery haha. I still loved football but I would feel really left out because everyone in Maryland constantly shit on the Jags lol.

So I started watching all the games and playing a bunch of Madden, and trying to figure out WHY my team sucked at least so it'd be easier to swallow. It's felt better to be able to enjoy the sport / other teams to offset my frustration with the Jaguars, and actually know what I'm talking about when my sports friends didn't want to talk about the shitty Jaguars.

Recently I had to emotionally hide my signed AB mini-helmet I got when I was 18. If I left out I would get rid of it, and I’ll probably (maybe?) want it later

That's just sad man. I was RECENTLY a huge Antonio Brown fan. I'm not surprised but definitely really bummed to find out he's a piece of shit.

Schefty just said what I was thinking:

Maybe Brown is doing this on purpose to lower his value so a team can get him for less than what the Steelers would want, which would open the door for more teams to maybe be willing to give up a late 2 or a 3rd round pick so it’s “easier” for Brown to be moved.

And / or he wants the Steelers to get less in return to him because he’s that unhappy with the franchise.

Now, his actions may be lowering his trade value in terms of what it takes to get him, but it’s also making it harder for a team to WANT to offer anything because who knows if he is in a good mindset.

  23. Brown throwing furniture over a balcony almost hitting a child and driving 100mph and not showing up for your court date and pushing a woman to the ground isn't him doing things on purpose to lower trade value. It's the start of a trend of questionable behavior.

The guy was an outstanding player and from all accounts teammate up until a year or 18 months ago. What happened to create these off the field issues and on the field divisions?
