Gordon honestly doesn’t help the Chargers offense much more than Ekeler does because Ekeler is so electric as a pass catcher. So in that case yeah I totally see why they don’t extend Gordon.

 

Randall is right, it’s just that there are only 3, maybe 4 running backs that are that elite and worth extending.

Otherwise, RBBC or whatever is ideal.

 

But the problem is, you extend those guys and within a year or two, they're the ghost of David Johnson's past. Contracts aren't based around what have you done for me, they're based around what will you do me moving forward.

Sure, you just have to be sure that they’re going to continue being dominant. That’s why we got Pollard this year and he was amazing at giving Zeke breaks.

 

This is just a recent trend though. The last era of great running backs in the 2000s had a ton of guys who were still good at age 29-30. But I can’t deny it’s a thorn in the side of my whole argument that lately, RBs have been getting these weird long term injuries that make them suck forever.

I do feel like it’s a numbers game though, and it only makes sense we’ll start seeing other backs stay healthy and stay good in comparison to the DJ / Gurley etc situations.

 

The most frustrating part of this argument is that ALL OF US AGREE and we're just talking about it in different ways because we can't read the subtext between each other's statements

 

We’ll trade or let Pollard’s rookie contract end and then move onto the next. And if Zeke shows he can still handle the workload of a generational RB, we’ll draft another Pollard that year.

I think there’s 8 or so backs worth extending, considering how they already get paid less money and smaller guarantees than every other prime position.

That’s the key subtext - if backs got paid what top WR or CB or DE get paid? I’d totally agree with y’all that only CMC and MAYBE Elliott earns that kind of money.

But for like, offensive guard money? Bruh yeah I’d sign Fournette as long as he didn’t demand 60% guarantees and as long as we could front load it to protect ourselves from injury.

 

Eight? Zeke, CMC, Barkley.....who else?

 

Again, I’m talking about for $12-$13M per year. That’s really not enough money to fuck with your salary cap plans versus how much those 8 backs are helping you on the field. Do you have any idea how badly the Jags need Fournette to even be a competent offense lol

 

Who are the 5 I'm missing? I'm not giving Kamara big money anymore, nor Henry, nor Fournette, nor Gordon, nor Bell...

Mark Ingram would be on the list for example.

As would Gurley tbh, he just got paid TOO much for a guy who had just gotten hurt. The Rams is overpaying everybody out here cause that’s what happens when you move to LA, sign a ton of free agents and set yourself up for super bowl hype. If Gurley got paid more modestly like other RBs and wasn’t guaranteed so much money over so long he’d be worth it.

You’re also definitely missing Joe Mixon (he’s an abuser so I wouldn’t sign him, I just mean talent level) and James Conner. And I’ve always liked Fournette more than you do, if he stays healthy next year like he did this year & proves 2018 was not normal? Then yeah I wanna pay him within reason.

Henry is iffy. He’s the “line” imo. If he can keep going fucking off like this routinely then yeah but I also agree with Dustin’s point that you better make sure your coach can keep momentum in games, because otherwise that’s a lot of money to have him on the bench.

I wouldn't pay Mixon or Conner. Well, IIIII'D pay Conner whatever because cancer survivors stick together, but whatever lol. Wouldn't pay Fournette. You saying "if only the Rams paid Gurley less and guaranteed it less" makes me chuckle. Def wouldn't pay Henry one dime this offseason. And Mark Ingram can get paid what he is now, $5 million.

 

What I’m saying is he’s an example of a back who deserved that extension to begin with. No I’m obviously not saying he’d earn a third extension at that cost. I’m talking about backs good enough for second extensions.
