Mostert hasn’t been getting 25 carries but he absolutely has been leading that backfield since like week 12. Shanahan explicitly told a reporter that he was likely to roll with Mostert more often several weeks ago, that he has earned the lead role in that room. I know this because that’s why I moved Mostert to my RB2 slot in fantasy toward the end of the year.

He rips off a lot of big runs so perhaps he doesn’t need all 25 carries to be that 100 yard workhorse *shrug*

Okay, correct. I was confused the way you worded it.

I would say I'm more of an opponent of drafting a RB inside the top 20 unless you have literally no other holes, and then i'd be more in favor of using the franchise tag on them then handing out massive second contracts that are destined to be terrible.

And I think the better way to argue Matt's point is better to pay 3 average RBs and see who works out then go all in one RB who can only help you so much.

Well, aside from the 49ers last game.

Also, thats not what a workhorse is so the clarification is meaningless haha

separate from whatever the hell is being argued about....

San Fran only has 3 players on offense that were drafted in the first round - and all of them were o-line, and one was in 2007. the number of undrafted / late round picks on offense is crazy and would make Ted Thompson swoon.

Mmmmm using first round picks on fat guys. Now there's a strategy I can get behind.

I see the point Randall is trying to make (Mostert isn't the best example though), clearly you need to get the most out of your workhorse back early on their first contract and then move on

Which is why I'm drafting two in every Jags mock haha. I also draft a RB every year personally.

Yeah it’s hard to make this argument and talk about the niners because their running game is such a unique machine lol

I just don’t think you’re doing yourself any favors or coming out ahead by signing or drafting 3 runmingbacks haha. At best it’s a moot point. I would much rather have a guy I can lean on to be consistent, who can get yards even when the blocking is subpar. Than try to figure out each week which back is gonna be “hot” and which one is just gonna hurt my gameflow. Especially because whoever is “hot” needs to stay in the game long enough to get in a rhythm anyway.

Also don’t agree that second contracts are “destined to be terrible” lol. RBs are useful in so many different ways, I really don’t see what’s so bad about paying an elite RB $15 mill per season (so still considerably less than an elite WR costs, even though RB have more responsibility in the offense)

Well true, the Gurley, Bell, Johndon, Gordon, McKinnon, and Freeman situations have gone swimmingly thus far.

See how is this not a bigger waste of resources than investing in one back and being done with it? I’m sorry but a team with a lot of needs like us should not be spending a mid round pick every year on a back esp if we already spent a first round pick on one and he’s good.

Cheap runningbacks are the way to go, it's worked for the Eagles as well.

following up on the defensive side of the ball for SF they have six players that were drafted in the first round*

and ALL OF THEM except Ward are on the defensive line. i knew they picked d-line a lot but their first round picks in 15, 16, 17 and 19 were all on the d-line. and then they traded for Ford who was a first round pick by KC in 14.

    * not counting players on injured reserve because i'm not that bored / interested to look it up

fun fact i learned today - FIVE different QB's have been the starting QB for both San Fran and KC. weird.

    Nope. Supporter

Of the teams that made the playoffs this year, SF, Seattle, and KC were RBBC all year. I don't quite know which category to put the Ravens in cause they're super unique. NO is also skewed to look more RBBC since Kamara missed games.

Eagles and Bills were RBBC for most of the season, but by the end it seems they found their workhorse backs in Sanders/Singletary.

Vikings, GB, Houston, NE, Tennessee all very clearly have their workhorse backs, and with the exception of Houston all have them cheap on their first contract. (Hyde is cheap but not first contract)

So it's fair to say the workhorse system can work, but they almost certainly need to be on their first contract

RB talent falls all the time because people focus on need over talent when thats just a stupid philosophy in the late rounds.

    Jags 5-0*** Prestigious

Gordon wasn’t signed and Freeman & McKinnon both make less than 10M per season

Gurley still had 12 TD despite an injury lingering from late last year

Bell and Johnson are on really bad teams but yes those were busts.

  25. Fucking Dustin

Tell me what I missed Moderator

Houston doesn't have a workhorse back anymore, Lamar Miller ain't gonna stay

Hyde+Duke is what we're running with I'm sure since my pipe dream of Etienne is dead and they both end up on the field a lot
