what's even crazier to me (in a way) is that the 49ers were in Super Bowl 47 and then basically imploded.

2012 - lose Super Bowl on (basically) last play of the game
2013 - lose NFCCG vs Seattle on last play of the game
    2014 - 8-8 no playoffs
2015 - 5-11 Jim Tomsula coaches one year. returns as coach! he was interim coach after Singletary got fired and yet wasn't deemed good enough to be coach after being interim coach but is then seen to be good enough coach a few years later lmao
    2016 - 2-14 the Chip Kelly era!

2017 - 6-10 Kyle Shanahan year 1. started 0-9, no wins until the Jimmy G trade then everyone thought he was the best QB on the planet
2018 - 4-12 but Jimmy gets hurt in week 3, paving the way to Bosa @ #2
2019 - make Super Bowl, dominant team all year, lose 3 games by a combined 13 points

like, that franchise went from almost winning a Super Bowl to losing a real good QB that Harbaugh refused to use properly (ironically enough, unlike his brother with Lamar), to having 4 coaches in 4 years and going 21-43 in that span, to trading for their (probably) long-term QB and within 2 1/2 years (less if taking out the injuries) making the Super Bowl. craziness.

add in if their two 1st round picks in 2017 would have been anything less than total dogshit (one is bad on the field one is bad off the field) how much farther along this team would be (picks were Solomon Thomas and Reuben Foster)

Totally agreed. Their implosion and reconstruction is outrageous. Super bright future there. Gross!

I don't think it's been that crazy of a journey compared to a lot of NFL teams who enter contention tbh.

Also as far as your last point goes, if Solomon Thomas and Reuben Foster aren't dogshit they probably don't get Nick Bosa so idk it all worked out how it needed to work out apparently

i agree about the picks. if they pan out they don't get (or need) Bosa and don't pick 2nd.

    but...

how many teams have made two Super Bowls the last 7 seasons? that's my point about their crazy up and down the last 7 seasons. they basically went from being the 2nd best team in the league for at least one year (some may feel they were better than the Giants they lost to in the NFCCG, among other teams) to picking inside the top of the draft 3 years in a row, to suddenly making the Super Bowl.

lots of teams have made drastic changes in 7 years, it's the nature of the sport, but no other football team has done / gone through what SF has done, at least not lately. and my post about the SF transition was in response to the Lions changing the guard and look what's happened there lol (sorry Joe). team may improve, yes, but making the Super Bowl after going through what they did? that's pretty hard to do.

I think it's kind of crazy that they ascended back to this point in such a short time and after their 3rd regime change since 2014

The Broncos will never not be complete fucking idiots for having the inside track on Kyle Shanahan and instead thought Vance Joseph was the answer

I mean not to be the one to say this but Matt did kinda call this.* It's not like SF was sitting idly all this time that they were failing. They made like a million 1st round picks in the defense, kept the OL decent, signed Richard Sherman and Dee Ford, made a trade for Jimmy G, and had Kyle Shanahan to steer the ship. Like you said, everyone thought Jimmy G was the best QB on the planet when they brought him in, and I don't think it's far fetched to say like "oh they acquired this QB in a big trade and gave him a massive contract, now he's healthy for a full season and they're in the Super Bowl!" That really feels like all it is. They filled in the gaps for the team while searching for a franchise guy, then found him and made it the moment he was there for ~16 games. A franchise QB has been the difference between getting to the Super Bowl and not getting to the Super Bowl for a while.

*-The 49ers making the SB is deadly for Matt and Dave though considering how much they've spent both on QB and RB and still succeeded as a team

It's funny, they basically have had the same draft strategy as the Jets, spend all your 1st round picks on d-lineman, but they've actually been able to capitalize on it

Yeah and I think a big part of that is being willing to admit when a guy isn't up to standards and letting him ride the bench for other talent while also filling out the rest of the defense

And also just being ran better by virtue of not being the Jets

You can’t really give Matt credit for calling this and then say the QB made the biggest difference. Matt’s take has always been “Jimmy isn’t that good”

That's true! I just meant in terms of bringing the defense up to the level it's been at and Kyle Shanahan being such a difference maker right off the bat

1200 / 9 TD vs 1000 / 8 TD? The difference is literally we started Foles for 4 games and got blown out in all of them. Chark was just as good when he had someone at least as good as Fitz throwing to him.

My favorite awful commercial airing right now is the one where the guy almost gets hit by the car and his wife cries to their child and says "he's okay!" over him ALMOST being hit by a car that braked in time thanks to braking assist

Like wtf if they lived in Dallas she'd be crying like that daily hahaha

They just needed "not Brian Hoyer" go figure

But also they still built a roster to win with a giant QB salary on the books so fuck it he loses

Also, they spent on runningbacks with an S. Better have three average guys to rotate than one good workhouse. Especially when it costs the same. Also, McKinnon was supposed to be their guy. Howd that work out :p
