so a few days ago i was looking at the draft history of the Jaguars (idek why) and they spent a first round pick on a DT two years in a row which i found interesting. like, was the first DT they picked so bad that they spent the following 1st round pick on his replacement? and it made me wonder if any other teams spend first round picks on the same position.

i don't have the data done yet, but my god was the first round of the 2000 draft strange and right off the bat i kind of found an answer to my question:

- Jets had FOUR first round picks - they had two back to back picks and selected DE's with both of them!
- SEVEN teams didn't have first round picks (only 3 teams had two first round picks, so not sure where the rest went)
- Raiders picked Janokowski with the 17th pick lmao


edit: just remembering that Detroit wasted like 3 straight top 5 picks on wide receivers.

omg the Rams had 3 first round picks in 2001 and selected two DT's! this seems so strange to me.

 

Also lots of people think skyline is just the shitty franchised version of the Cincinnati cuisine, so I’m taking this to mean he’s more of a Dixie Chili guy. Honestly have to respect it

 

Raiders Janikowski pick is probably the best draft pick they've had in the last 20 years lol

 

I know it's not QUITE the same thing but Falcons drafted Desmond Trufant and Robert Alford in rounds 1 and 2 of the same draft

 

Henderson and Stroud were both elite and a big part of our playoff runs in 2005 and 2007. Those were actually good moves.

Stroud was the kind of explosive DT who gives you 8-10 sacks, while Big John was widely recognized as a top 5 run stuffing DL in the NFL (and also would get 5-6 sacks as a 335 pounds nose tackle)

 

And not only do I know which DT you were talking about without even looking it up, but I also can name you an example of the Jags doing that stupidly -

Derrick Harvey and Quentin Groves were two DE we drafted in 2008 to replace Hugh Douglas and Reggie Hayward, round 1 and round 2. Both of them were HUGE busts and we had no pass rush after that

 

in a way, i get it. obviously not real life but i would do that in Madden sometimes - spend high picks on one position group and if it works out you're set there for, ideally 8-10 years and can then focus on other things. but in real life it looks like if you spend first round back to back picks on one position it's either because you have the luxury of doing so or because you really screwed up the first time around lol.

 

Jets then also spent their 2002 first round pick on a DE lol

 

Groves was one of those fast shitters in Madden that I loved using when I purposefully picked the Raiders lol, that game was so broken in the 2010's

It's also just worth it to draft who you believe is the best player available in the draft

If you need defensive back help and you have the choice between drafting Dee Milliner or Deandre Hopkins your team's gonna get better by drafting Hopkins in the end

Not to say you shouldn't draft players at positions of need but hyper focusing on it can result in a lot of misses

 

This is the correct philosophy.

 

The only reason to avoid this is if you have a really young stud already at this position who is locked up and is the only one you need. Basically, if you already have DeAndre Hopkins, maybe you can survive not having a second in exchange for having a second Tunsil. Oh, and don't draft RBs in the top 20.

A second Tunsil is equally if not more valuable than a second Hopkins though, at least in draft terms

Usually because it’s often hard to tell the elite receivers from the good ones at the college level.

 

If I had to bet, the Jets have used something like 40-50% of their first round picks on DE's since 2000. The number of times they've had two elite DE's under the age of 26 and STILL taken a DE at #12 is ridiculous
