So who takes Foles' contract this offseason? Bears? (Yeah in this fantasy Minshew wins league MVP)

Well, it’s an unreasonable expectation for scouts to go off anything other than what a player puts on film and in private workouts though. Like, for as many Gardner Minshews totally surprise everybody with how fast they can learn, I bet there’s 99 busts that the GM just “had a good feeling about” despite clear inconsistencies on tape.

Fuck, look at Taven Bryan. All he did was bull rush in college without clear run gap or pass rush plans, and that’s still all he does now regardless if his athleticism and the fact he fell to the bottom of round 1 made us “believe” he could learn other skills.

I feel like a player who consistently does it right and is self motivated to the point of being a perfectionist, coming out of college, IS nfl ready... whereas a player who doesn’t show that all the time... they MIGHT be... but front offices can’t operate off of “might”.

#NFLReady is generally just a term applied to a couple of positions meant to pigeonhole what the position can do. Mahomes wasnt #NFLReady. Neither was Lamar or Watson or Minshew. Or Brady!!!!

Of course, I just think that like when people go in retrospect and be like "well OBVIOUSLY he was going to succeed" or "well OBVIOUSLY he's going to fail" it's not really ever that obvious haha. But like...professional scouts DO see a lot of that behind the scenes stuff and it's STILL a gamble. Really just a comment on how wild and unpredictable it all is and about how anyone who thinks they have it completely down is probably an idiot.

Andrew Luck feels like the one time it was really obvious the team drafting him was getting a franchise guy.

Well that’s not what I mean by NFL ready. What I mean is; the coaches have more work to do with a less NFL ready prospect. Doesn’t really say anything definite about whether they will or won’t succeed long term, because a lot of players overcome tons of shortcomings while others are forever held back by the same flaw.

If you really trust your coaching staff to develop players to their full potential it probably doesn’t matter as much. But then again most teams cannot say that lol.

So what you're saying is to you NFL ready means they're not as not ready as the other guys who are also not ready, got it (also still basically my point but fuck me)

Right, and tbh all I can really base that on is things I routinely see rookie NFL QBs struggle to learn. So there’s gonna be some subjectivity involved based on what I perceive no matter what.

My most valued skills for a rookie QB are pocket presence and anticipation. These things are vital regardless of scheme imo. A QB who throws with anticipation on a regular basis gets a huge leg up for me because that is an advanced skill, it’s something that helps you stay ahead of defenses even when they’re gameplanning against you, and half the QB who get drafted on day 1 or 2 never figure it out.

Really the same thing with pocket presence, not very many young QB walk into the league with those eyes in the back of their head (hence what made Murray so valuable). These are probably the biggest two things I base this judgment call off of. They also kinda go hand in hand cause if a QB is anticipating and shuffling smoothly in the pocket; that probably also means he’s calm enough under pressure to play deliberately and continue to execute the game plan, rather than becoming erratic and impulsive.

In college it’s a lot easier to scheme people open, considering the defensive standards aren’t as high for most teams. As people have said, Baker Mayfield is struggling to “plan ahead” so to speak and get rid of the ball early behind a subpar O line, because he wasn’t asked to do that in college.

Daniel Jones, however did that shit all day at Duke. Hence, me considering him more “NFL ready” than most even though Baker was looked at as a better long term prospect. I knew that even if Jones went to a team like NYG with a bad line, he would be more prepared to handle that adversity than a big 12 QB who played shotgun all game and hardly dealt with a scary pass rush.

Regardless of their playing style... Even if you put a QB in an offense tailor made for them they will still hit setbacks if they don’t develop these kinds of requisite, pro-level skills. I get that Minshew is a great example of a QB who literally just learned how to do these things this offseason but that’s rare as hell. If the guy doesn’t already have those habits out of college it takes TIME, a good environment (receivers, line, etc)... and good coaching usually to teach them.

Will some teams still draft a Lamar Jackson and eat 2-3 raw seasons while they develop him? Yeah, and if your roster is talented & your coaching staff is stable that’s not a bad plan, it can sometimes pay off to go for upside rather than a more polished QB with a high “floor”. Especially if you know how to scheme well enough to hide your QBs flaws as the Ravens are doing with Lamar. But my argument to that is that not every team is good at that. The Bills might be winning right now but imma be shocked if Josh Allen ever stops being a sloppy quarterback under that coaching staff.

I didn’t like Allen at pick 5 cause he wasn’t nearly “NFL ready enough”, however Lamar’s potential was a steal at 32 despite his shortcomings. So it really depends on the player, the situation he’s going to, and where he was drafted / which QB went ahead of him. Very context dependent. At a certain point it DOES make more sense to take a boom or bust risk on a player who’s “not there yet” considering the polished QBs are almost always gone first, while the teams who really know how to coach usually pick late.
