Jimmy Clausen could say the same breakdown Watson gave the other day. It's cool he did it because I like that stuff but let's stop pretending he's some genius for being able to breakdown a coverage. 90% of success is the execution. Most of them have the base knowledge.

Im not sure they would. The premise of the trade for Osweiler is you are willing to eat salary cap space for a pick...and the Browns knew Osweiler was probably not startable. Whereas a team taking on Cousins would likely be starting him every week (saves you paying a guy $5mil/yr to be the starter, etc).

Though a trade where a team got Diggs + Cousins for nothing (or some 2021 7th) would actually be super clever. Get a good player in exchange for eating that cap space

I am hoping Miami uses some if its cap space to get creative and do something like this. We aren't realistically going to be able to sign $130 million worth of free agents.

 

Cousins has no dead money. Its all guaranteed salary...so, he's owed whatever is left of his 2019 salary + $29.5 million to whichever team has him. Guaranteed salary transfers to the new team while any bonus money spread out accelerates.

If Miami traded for him, they could cut him right away for like a $45mil dead cap hit. They could keep him through June 1 next year and cut him after that and spread out the $29.5mil over 2 seasons. But he's owed it no matter what.

Its also why Diggs is hard for Minny to trade without dumping Cousins. He just resigned and his bonus money accelerates; hurting their cap this year and next. They'd be like $10mil over the 2020 cap, functionally forcing them to get rid of Cousins

edit: So, thinking back to trading Cousins for a high pick; the fact that it doesnt hurt MIN maybe does argue for a 1st instead of a 2nd; Osweiler cost HOU some dead money and only cleared $10mil in cap space. Whereas Cousins would clear like $40+ mil over 2 seasons

You're unlucky that MIN has a relatively easy schedule before the trade deadline...if they had that @KC/DAL/SEA stretch earlier, you could probably talk them into handing you Cousins and Diggs and mid-rounder for like, Ryan Fitzpatrick
