I’m not, I’m agreeing with you overall about Aikman being ahead of Mahomes for awhile, but also pointing out examples of QB with less accolades whose careers I still acclaim more and am more impressed by. I think winning, you can’t separate QB from teams so it’s more useful to include other metrics that the Qb has more direct control over.

Fair enough, Rodgers definitely impacts a game more than Aikman, although I think you’re taking away a bit too much credit from Aikman and overly praising Rodgers. Aikman was in a really tough division his whole career and Rodgers has thrived in an awful division. Say what you want about the packers, they’ve been a much better org for his career than the lions, bears, and Vikings.
Anyway the more I think about it I might take Rodgers career with a couple mvps and a Super Bowl over Aikmans so I chose a bad example. If Mahomes gets a few mvps (which he will) and a super bowl I agree with you altogether so cheers

But changing the entire basis of the original debate renders it kind of pointless, no?

I get what you’re saying in general though.

I honestly don’t remember much about the Giants, Eagles in the 90s. Can someone refresh me? I definitely think @Victor Eremita may be onto something with the division comment. Though I know the Redskins took a nose dive and then became perennially average after Doug Williams wasn’t on the team anymore.

NFC East won 5 of 6 Super Bowls in that time period and the 1991 Redskins are regarded by some as the greatest team in NFL history.

    Giants over Bills
    Redskins over Bills
    Cowboys over Bills
    Cowboys over Bills
    49ers over Chargers
    Cowboys over Steelers

And from 89-96, we sent 2 or 3 teams to the playoffs every year except when it was just us in 94. And five of those teams won a Super Bowl.

I see it as related. I’m trying to explain why I would already take Mahomes over Aikman, and think he’s going to have a more illustrious career regardless whether he actually wins multiple superbowls in a few years or not, because he’s gonna keep overperforming and overachieving with a likely always porous roster. That is more valuable than anything imo, a QB who can give a mostly errant franchise contender status by himself.

I am asserting that I am less interested in a snapshot of what he has accomplished now, and more interested in what he can potentially accomplish with so much damn talent in the future. Saying that “I think this isn’t an effective angle to look at this” is responding to the discussion. It’s not moving the goalposts when I literally say “I just don’t like to look at it like that” and explain why. The original parameters of the discussion seemed trivial to me.

As an Eagles fan, those early 90s teams will always hold a special place in my heart. Reggie White, Jerome Brown, Eric Allen, Clyde Simmons, Andre Waters on the defense. And Cunningham was obviously awesome to watch. It’s such a shame they never made a deep run, the NFC east was stacked with the Cowboys run and the Giants, and of course there was the 49ers. In 91 they went 10-6 in that division/conference despite losing Cunningham in the first game of the season.

Buddy Ryan only cared about defense.

Rodgers won it? That was the best defense he ever played with. Defense shut down the Falcons and their best offense, won the NFC championship game (offense provided a whopping 14 points), and forced 2-3 turnovers in the Super Bowl.

Rodgers certainly did his part during that run, but the defense was also, uh, really good and like #1 in turnovers that year.

  15. Ahh the better QB argument again. Need to start marking these on my calendar so I can prepare myself.

I'm confident the Steelers would have beat the Packers in the super bowl if Mendenhall didn't fumble that ball.

    That's my #hottake for today

Packers/Steelers being played here in our stadium made me want to puke. What an awful experience that was.

Would it change that much to have one more ring? He’d have two mvps and two rings (so far) with all time great stats and efficiency. Probably jumps him over Brees and Elway but still behind Brady, Manning, and Montana right?

  20. Mendenhall fumbled the first play of the fourth quarter at the GB 36. Such a huge play. Credit Clay Matthews for making it happen.

Edit I see you said zero rings. Haha yeah we know what that would be like because we saw Dan Marino

  22. Man that Steelers super bowl run was impressive with the shit oline they put out there week in and week out. Their super bowl starting Oline - Jonathan Scott, Chris Kemoteau, Doug Legursky, Ramon Foster, Flozell Adams.

Also, I don't see why Aikman felt to be a smug dick about it, he just comes off as petty.

If I knew we had a capable #2 TE to replace Goedert, I would do this. Even if we didn’t have a capable replacement, I still might do it.
