But like...flipping perspective to player real quick...how is that my problem? "I've given you the first few years of my career, proved I am THE man, and i'm getting paid scraps compared to what I should be earning. Why should I waste any more of my prime earning years helping you recover from bad decisions and other guys inability to do what I do, stay healthy."

Especially when the initial contract isn't even something he agreed to. The years were set, the salary was set. He had no say in the matter. So, it's not even like he said "yeah, lock me up for four years, i'm committed, let's go"

    Like, see what I mean?

Popping in here before work to say I agree with everything you're saying, especially this. The fifth-year option for first round picks is one thing and I don't think it's problematic, but the franchise tag is such bullshit. Just shows a total lack of commitment.

Yep. Players should not be held responsible for front offices making poor choices.

rookie contracts should be 3 years. If you want to do a 4th year option for 1st rounders, thats fine

    The rivalry is back on

I think it can happen if the Pat Mahomeses of the league decide they're signing 1 year contracts with player options going forward and jumping teams every 2-3 years to the situation with the best cap scenario to assemble the best group of skill position players.

I think this would be okay too

I think this is fair. By year 3, you know what a player is. If you need an extra year of "okay, we're here, let's get this extension sorted" i get that. 3+1 with no franchise tag seems fair to me.

Eh. He’s making more than any other first round corner’s rookie deal right now because of how high he was drafted (except maybe Denzel Ward)... no 4th year player gets paid that soon. Even if they sign an extension early, most the guarantees don’t kick in until they come to camp year 5.

the fifth year option is definitely cheaper than his contract would be, but he’s still gonna get paid like $14M and is due to be resigned a year after that. So I wouldn’t call it wasting his prime earning years, he just makes less for one season (but still a lot more than the rookie deal) and THEN becomes the highest paid CB of all time.

I think it’s really less about that and more about Marrone. Ramsey straight up doesn’t want to play for a stick in the mud who’s afraid to get aggressive and act like a winning coach. If we replaced him with a coach that gets Ramsey fired up I bet he’d be accepting (even if a little salty) about playing under his 5th year option.

I don’t have an issue with the rookie contract length, but the franchise tag is abusive in more cases than not. Especially in such a brutal sport

I think this concern only happens if contracts are fully guaranteed like they are in the NBA. But if they're not, players aren't gonna be comfortable with that little long term security.

entry level contracts in the NHL are 3 years but then you are a restricted free agent and the team still holds your rights

I think NBA entry level deals are 3 years too with options after that

Oh, I know it's 100% Marrone, because he sucks. But, I have trouble faulting a guy being like "if i'm not getting paid, why stick around and deal with this schmuck. Get me outta dodge." and clearly Marrone isn't going anywhere which is dumb.

Also, maybe Ramsey would reconsider if they fired Marrone. I think he said he wouldn’t, but who knows

The quote was “what can the Jaguars do to keep you around” and Ramsey refused to answer, “I can’t even bullshit”

This could be interpreted a lot of ways, but I feel like the most likely is, he wants to say “coaching / front office changes” but he literally cannot say that without being fined by the NFL / Jaguars and looking bad in front of all the other teams. It’s a bad look all around to publicly assert that you know more than the management does about their jobs, even if the management is trash.

If he wanted to say “there’s nothing the Jags can do different at this point, I’m just ready for what’s next” he would just fucking say it cause there’s no consequences for that. But idk. My gut feeling is he wants out cause he’s tired of Marrone taking him out of his element and more importantly, losing games stupidly cause he fumbles key moments with confused / soft play calling.

For the record, NBA is a bad comparison because the lottery system sucks, smaller rosters therefore higher player impact, and only a handful of good prospects every year.

I have started to notice that Doug Marrone likes to soften the coverage when the game gets tense and if I’m Jalen Ramsey I would hate that. Motherfucker, 9 times out of 10 if you let me press-cover that dude on 3rd down, I’m gonna blow up the play and make it look like it was never possible.

That's why as much as I see people be like "Pull an AB and come to Houston" I know that 100% isn't happening despite any friendships hahaha. Like if he's frustrated about Marrone doing it why would he then go to Bill O'Brien?

    Feel the Wrath Supporter

MLB is probably the purest comparison, because they have lots of money to spend, roster sizes are fairly large (though not NFL large), and there's a pretty big spread of salaries.

MLB is undeniably worse than the NFL in terms of guys getting paid early because their rules are insane...but their 2nd deals are always massive because there is no cap and the no franchise tag.

If the NFL got rid of the franchise tag, 5th year option, and RFA tags, I think they'd have a pretty good system. Every good player would be getting new deals after year 3 (or UFA's after year 4), mid-level players would get overpaid after year 4, and players whose original teams wasted them but play well in year 3 for a new team wouldnt be screwed by the RFA tag. Teams wouldnt blow up their cap space on unproven players, and the wait to get paid is about the average NFL career (3.5yrs I believe)

edit: Also, I think they should adopt the HS vs 3-yr player rule from the MLB. Teams can draft a guy right out of HS, but if he doesnt sign, he has to wait til 21.

    there is one way out

As expected, Tomlin announced that Minkah will spending his time at free safety to take Sean Davis’ spot. I’d expect Davis to be gone after this year.
