At least Rashean Mathis made sense cause he kept getting hurt. And we did drop MJD at the right time.

My concern is that they can probably be a wild card team even with their flaws but they have a window with this roster and they can never seem to be better than Atlanta or New Orleans (2015 aside). The offense is never good enough and they never have an answer for Julio or Brees. Same with Seattle except for one year. It just seems like 8-9 wins is the most they can ever get out of this roster even when Cam and Luke are playing well.

Rebuilding is the new fad among sports executives and fans, it seems. Rebuilding in the NFL is really lame. Its not the same as the NBA and MLB. Teams don't know what they are going to get with as much precision as in those other leagues. I would hate to watch my team perpetually tank because they didn't luck into the next franchise QB. And then when they do so, have a roster that is unable to help him. Give me seasons of as many wins as you can get.

The NFL is all about having a great QB for maintaining success. Otherwise you have a brief, unsustainable period where you have a great roster that finds success. I think all teams should try to build the best roster possible while trying to find the next great QB since they are fairly unpredictable. That way you will at least have a few exciting years.

Also, always trade your first round pick for more picks! With how much teams and fans over value first round picks, there's opportunity to trade down and reap the benefits. That's a different topic, I think, though.

Which is exactly what I'm saying. Only difference is I'm not fine with that haha

I see what you're saying for sure, but they're not really at that point yet, that's entirely dependent on the new coach, like maybe they hire someone who's scheme fits into what they're already doing. But if not, yeah you should try and trade those players, but again they're not really at that point yet.

It's a good point but Cam and Rivera have both been there since 2011 so it's hard to really judge what a change at coaching and the most important position might do for better OR for worse

Being bad in the NFL is SOOOOO much better than being bad in any other sport I really dont know how you can even argue otherwise.

@CarpetElf Reggie Nelson too! He was great for Cincy for a whole contract extension after us.

Like, maybe we didn’t tank intelligently and trade with teams who are willing to overpay. But it at least explains why I don’t think tanking is this magic reset button that you magically draft all good players for 2 drafts and fill all your gaping roster holes. Maybe like 2 GM’s in the whole league are savvy enough to do that, let alone the coaching reaching those potential expectations (see: Gus Bradley)

and I dont want to watch my team be 7-9 for literally 2 decades with no hope of ever improving.

Like who's to say a new coach doesn't immediately make them into how we've been looking at the Rams

FWIW I'm strictly talking Panthers I don't think the Dolphins are in the same position and there's no point comparing the two

Betting on unknowns to be good at finishing below average > staying put with knowns that are average and still finishing below average

If you can bring in a guy with the same general scheme as Rivera and just better execution you definitely want those defensive players still around

Also FWIW I think tanking is bullshit, I get why teams do it and it's a completely logical and effective thing to do but I don't like rooting for tanking

You could tank without losing 50-0

I think there's more hope in finding success with a good roster at 7-9 than tanking and hoping a QB solves the problem for you. Even more hope if you are actively trying to do them both at the same time.

There are always great players throughout most rounds of the draft. There arent even necessarily GOOD players after the first couple picks in the NBA

they lost to the Ravens 40-0 or something last year when they were really trying. They just have our number for whatever reason

I actually don’t disagree with any of this and I also feel like those teams that constantly go 7-9 could be doing a lot better with good coaching. It’s easy to blame the roster but honestly some of these teams we say are too mediocre and need to be blown up... teams have damn near won Super Bowls in the past with less lol

Like hey what if the Browns go 7-9 again? Do they blow up the team? Trade Myles Garrett?
