It just seems like regressive fandom to me to strip these players of humanity and tell them to just suck it up, doubly so when it's so obvious that the team is tanking, and the Dolphins management is the farthest thing from unimpeachable.

A different situation as well, but I was happy to see Chris Long finally get ring(s) after doing good work on truly miserable Rams teams for a decade.

I was just about to come in here and say this is all being overcomplicated. Brandon’s not gonna like, send Fitz hate mail... but it definitely burns a bridge there between a fan of a team and a player they liked when that player falls out of love with the team. You can logically understand and accept what’s going on but still be salty about it.

Especially when you do see other players around the league like, idk Myles Garrett stick it out and have positive attitudes and wait for the next roster wave despite a rough first two years. Hell Khalil Mack BENEFITTED from being traded to Chicago but he was still all Oakland until Mayock got there and cut him loose.

 

I don’t have particular feelings one way or another about the Dolphins. I don’t blame them for tanking, the model incentivizes it. But then you can’t get mad when players don’t want to play for a 1-15 team.

I'm not mad. I said if he doesnt want to play for the team, he doesnt have to and they should trade him.

if thats me being "irrational", then guilty as charged!

 

I also have many longevity concerns about anyone playing a versatile role in defenses today.

I know Derwin James was mentioned and he's out for a while with a stress fracture at 23

 

Derwin James falling to the Chargers is hell. I hate every single team that passed on him for cursing him to that life.

This is why tanking isn’t an easy solution. You have to strike a balance that keeps your best, core players hopeful and well taken care of. It’s impossible to just full out tank and not even pretend or try to hide it without losing TOO much talent, to the point that you can’t even rebuild the team back for another 4+ years.
Players feel disrespected when they are asked to risk injury and dedicate their lives to strenuous body pain for nothing.

 

How many teams have hit with the #1 pick recently anyway?

Feels like first overall has more value as trade bait to a QB needy team than actually drafting there.

 

But yeah, if I was the Dolphins I'd trade damn near everything and run with vets just looking to keep playing. Panthers too. If I was that GM I'd blow it all up and leave only CMC and the two DJs.

Exactly! There’s no guarantee you’re even gonna pick the right guy. I just think that OVERALL you’re not improving your winning chances all that much by tanking. Losing the good players you do have reduces your ability to win, at least enough to cancel out how much getting higher draft picks increases the chances of drafting studs

 

I think the Dolphins are doing the right thing in tearing down and rebuilding. Hell, more teams should do it, but they’re entirely too comfortable with staying mediocre. Two things though:

1. If the Dolphins are rebuilding, they should be doing everything in their power to keep any young, promising players around for the long haul. They’be done that with Xavien Howard. I don’t believe they’re doing that with Minkah Fitzpatrick.

2. If Minkah wants out, whether it’s from a schematic/team-fit standpoint or from a philosophical standpoint, then more power to him. I don’t think anyone should be putting him on blast because he values his individual career at such a young age over a tanking organization.

 

Yup. Which is why I constantly highlight the difference between tanking with a handful of games left and tanking for the year.

Minkah is not even close to being eligible for an extension. He's played 1 season plus 1 game

 

Then you trade him for an ABSURD haul or you don't.

 

And then he walks in free agency and you’ve lost the primary offensive pillar you intended to keep while tanking

 

When you probably still would’ve been bad enough to pick top 15 and get really good players if you’re not dumb, without tanking and without pissing off CMC haha
