Sports culture is so toxic and enabling. I was at first pleasantly surprised to see ESPN cover the lawsuit but then they ask really fucked up and just stupid questions like “why file a civil lawsuit instead of going through the criminal courts” emphasizing that instead of criminal charges the accuser is seeking money damages. Then end the story. Pathetic way to cover pretty much the only avenue for victims to hold rapists accountable when cops and prosecutors inevitably fail to do anything. It was a Cosby civil case that finally sparked a criminal case because prosecutors are cowards when it comes to investigating and charging powerful men.
If Cristiano Ronaldo’s case is any indicator this poor woman will get drug through the mud by high priced lawyers and fans will loudly blame the victim. Ronaldo admitted to raping his accuser in writing and he still calls her a liar and he’s still globally celebrated because he kicks a ball well.
