There is apparently no such thing as a safe Mavericks lead, even when Booker fouls out and Ayton is in foul trouble all game. Cameron Payne got quality play time and the Mavs still couldn't seal it away. The Mavs had the refs in their pocket the whole game and yet, their sheer unclutchness prevailed.

 

Mavs might as well be locked into that 7th seed

Harden played great defense tonight. He's definitely underrated in that category.

 

He can turn it on and off but mostly keeps it off for his offense.

 

This really is not true anymore. He’s been much more consistent the last 3 or 4 seasons on that end.

 

Don’t really see it in here but I feel like people who give Harden shit about his defense either

a. never watch Houston games
b. Get mad about how he plays the game offensively

 

From what I’ve seen it is still the go to criticism in arguments about where he ranks among the NBA’s best.

Grading James Harden's Defensive Performance in 2019-20

Summary:
* Second least amount of points per post-up (among players with more than 50)
* 31st of 164 against the pick-and-roll
* 18th of 24 in fewest points per isolation attempt (of players with at least 75 defended)

He's definitely knocked for how he played earlier in his career, but he's turned into a much more capable defender.

harden is still a pretty terrible perimeter defender but he’s definitely improved in other aspects of that side of the ball
