That pricing model is bonkers. I don't care about the $69 a year amount, that's normal. But the cutoffs between that and the $99 a year are wild.

No I literally have given Jason Tate $3 and I'm not paywalled off on basic functionalities of the site whether or not I give him those $3.

there are a lot of people who read deadspin that can afford that - also why not shoot for the moon? If Jason decided to include stuff like "

• Your name listed on the site masthead under our Defector Hall of Fame
• Entry into quarterly lottery to co-host the Funbag section of the The Distraction podcast with Drew & Roth
• Custom MS Paint art from Chris for avatar use
• Annual video from a writer wishing you a happy birthday, the day after your birthday"

then he would be justified in raising the subscription price for that model.

I agree, and was probably one of, if not the best part of the site.

All I'm saying is the tiers in their current setup are a bad model. Could've easily had three obtainable tiers and then whatever that 4th one is.

 

way more people than you'd think are going to pay for the $1k per year package.

 

If Jason decided to turn off the forum unless you paid him $100 a year or $120 a year monthly, people would be rightfully upset.

I already pay $6.66 for Luke's incredible Hell World newsletter and that's only once or twice a week

12 bucks for unlimited articles from this collection of writers is a fucking steal

Very well may be, and I hope I'm wrong because Defector has now like 5 of my favorite writers, including two of my favorite female voices.

Because you’ve had free access to this site for four years, sure, that’d be a tough sell. This is a new thing where a lot of talented writers would like to keep themselves paid. I’m sure they can bring the tiers down in price if they fail to get the subs they expect, but I don’t see that being an issue for them.

 

I wish Jason charged for commenting privileges on AP news posts
