That is a good basket then. That was my first time seeing the play. The way I saw it described it sounded like it didn’t completely go through. What a mess haha.

I’d say the guys watching every game in the league office should have the ability to correct a missed basket like that to avoid this problem in the future. That is something that would have to be discussed for next season though. I don’t really think the league should change anything for that game or play an additional period. Just acknowledge the basket was missed and make corrections next year.

Yeah, there is nothing the NBA should do. I could *maybe* understand if it was the last play of the game or if it occurred in the final seconds and THAT exact play was the difference in the game but it happened when HOU was up 13 in 4th. HOU blew the game. That’s on them.

If the NBA goes back and changes a play, a score or makes them go back and play the final 8 min (which will never happen) then think of all the fouls, travels, out of bounds calls that happen during the course of a game that teams will start sending to the league office after games to try to get them reversed. It’d open up an entire can of worms.

Admit the refs fucked up and move on.

 

I used to call stepback travels all the time when I volunteer ref'd elementary school games when I was in high school. Mostly the 7th-8th grade teams, not the younger ones. Those are the years where we really needed to learn the fundamentals, and I gave those kids no breaks haha.

There will always be a disconnect with the rules of basketball because the NBA doesn’t have consistent rules to the lower levels. The officiating in the NBA is a part of the entertainment aspect of the event, hence a completely different view on traveling and other rules and violations.

That said, the rules at the lower levels are always changing as well. Kids will always imitate what they see on tv. I remember when Allen Iverson’s crossover was a big deal. That probably had a lot to do with the carrying violation that we are used to seeing. Then it became the “Euro-step”. Now it’s the Harden step back.

The NBA changed their traveling rule to allow for gather steps when receiving a pass and for beginning the process of the shooting motion. If you watch basketball at other levels beyond the NBA it is just a completely different game.
