Top 10 album all time for me. I cannot emphasize this enough: SEE THEM LIVE.

 

Yeah, one of those albums I'd always meant to get to, knowing I'd like it. I plan to see them live next chance.

 

I think I've seen them 8 or 9 times at this point. One of the tighest bands I've ever seen in terms of precision and jamming.

Also, it's a shame they took down the HD version of this performance but this is just MASSIVE. That crescendo at 6:28 is something else, just 100,000 Brits losing their goddamn mind to "Two Steps, Twice."

January in Review:
January's always an interesting month because at least half of the music on my list is me catching up. Albums I received for Christmas, EOTY lists from people/blogs I respect, random "you missed this" texts... all in all, I would say I heard some great stuff this month, but nothing that I can see in the running come December. My favorite "you missed this" pick from 2017 is Tyler Childers' Purgatory, which I believe might have squeezed into my top 10-15 had I known about it. Heard about it from Craig's list; the song "Feather Indians" (below) is instantly one of my favorite songs from the month.

As far as 2018 albums go, I was simply blown away by Strand of Oaks' alternate universe take Harder Love, a collection of unused songs and discarded takes from last year's disappointing Hard Love. How an absolute gem of a song like "Passing Out" got left off an album is wild to me, but I'm glad we have it now, and there's a whole set of sometimes dreamy, sometimes washed-out rock that I personally enjoy much more. (For more on this album and the philosophy behind it, I recommend Ryan Leas' excellent Stereogum piece.)

This month I also discovered the songwriter Caroline Rose, who's put out 3 consecutive indie rock JAMS that immediately moved her towards the top of my "most anticipated" list. (I'm 99% sure that the tongue-in-cheek "Soul No 5" will soundtrack an Apple commercial by July.) Ditto the electronic project Nation of Language, whose song "I've Thought About Chicago" harkens back to when LCD Soundsystem was a bedroom project and leaves me speechless in its wistful nostalgia. All in all, I can't wait to see what February brings, as there's much more music coming our way this year.
