July was good, not much along the lines of records I was highly anticipating and nothing really jumps out as anything I truly LOVE, but a good month nontheless. August has a loooooot of (hopefully) great stuff coming. Foxing, Interpol, Nothing, Wild Nothing, AK3, ERRA, and more.

July in Review: It's 92 degrees outside tonight as we climb the final crest of summer, and I am astounded how fast the season moves. I suppose it's the same meta distancing that everyone does these days, as if calling it out will make it less so. Tonight I'm listening to one of my favorite albums of the month, Lori McKenna's The Tree -- specifically the song "People Get Old", which puts the cyclical nature of life into matter-of-fact terms that somehow render aging both fatalistic and comforting at the same time. I'm truly not sure how she managed to find the words, but that's the magic of good songwriting. New York has been brimming with life since we got here, and plenty of music has brought a little extra movement to the days and nights of this summer. And yet, again, this month added even more. You can feel it in the way Future and Meek Mill and The Voidz barrel through crowded sidewalks, or how Wild Pink and Wet match the hazy crawl of underground congestion. Aside from Lori McKenna, I've been particularly into Rayland Baxter's incredibly vibrant album Wide Awake, which feels like the Beatles took some psychedelics with Dead and Company before a songwriting class in Nashville. I can't recommend it enough, and it's clearly among my favorites of the year. In the midst of all this beautiful, beautiful noise, The 1975 have put out another song that to me stands with their best. "Love It If We Made It" is structured like a Twitter feed, as if a stream-of-consciousness summation of bile and virality is the only way to properly capture the daily mayhem of 2018. If you emphasize the "WE", the titular refrain of "I'd love it if we made it" can be taken as a sort of defense mechanism, the rallying cry of an online mob that will blindly hold up their own worst impulses in the name of factional solidarity. Or you can do what they do in the song: emphasize the "MADE IT" and yell to the heavens like we're going to find our way out of this storm. In a way, it makes complete sense that the band had to push their release date back to November, when our country and the world at large might shift wildly based on the outcome of the midterm elections. But the way time's moving these days, that movement feels less like a delay and more like an inevitable start of something new. Top 2018 albums of the month: Rayland Baxter, Lori McKenna, Let's Eat Grandma Recommended Songs I discovered this month: Rayland Baxter - "Amelia Baker" Lori McKenna - "Young and Angry Again" Kady Rain - "R.A.D. Moves" Mac Miller - "What's The Use?" Insecure Men - "Cliff Has Left The Building"
