April in Review:
April was kind of a slow month for me as far as "instant AOTY contenders". A lot of the bigger releases on my calendar (Tinashe, Lord Huron, Post Malone) flopped for me immediately, and a few that I really enjoyed from the jump (Cardi B, Hop Along, The Aces) fell kind of flat on repeat listens.

I was lucky enough to get an advance copy of Father John Misty's newest album, which isn't due to come out until June. It's easily one of my favorites of the year so far, an intensely personal record that dives into the inherent personal struggle that comes with fully inhabiting his musical persona. Not only does it serve as a welcome and down-to-earth counterpoint to last year's purposefully epic Pure Comedy, but it also seems to exist in direct conversation with that project and the toll that seems to have come with it. The songwriting is beautiful as usual, a pastiche of 60s and 70s psychedelic folk filtered through Josh Tillman's one-of-a-kind lens.

I also spent a lot of time at the end of this month with Janelle Monáe's Dirty Computer, a political pop opus that speaks to the current moment. The album features artists like Grimes, Pharrell, Brian Wilson, and (most effectively!) Zoë Kravitz on a series of insanely catchy anthems about the freedom to love whoever you want. It's aiming for the dead center of the zeitgeist, and although it seems like Janelle has always had trouble with mainstream airplay, her music's certainly worth your attention.

I just meant I look over lists quickly and get recs from people who identify the same albums as me. That said, I generally treat this thread as a place for me to log stuff and write about my year in music, not so much look for recommendations.

I can't get how you guys have enough time to listen to all these albums.

 

It’s really not that difficult it’s prerty easy to listen to music pretty much anywhere you are. I listen to music all day at work so I have plenty of time

 

Most albums are around 40 minutes or so in length so it’s pretty easy for me to listen to a couple albums a day just during my commute to and from work.
