It’s amazing listening to hockey podcasts, especially team specific ones, because they’re all like “we’re pretty good or there are a handful of good teams and then there’s those freaks down in Tampa destroying the league”. Like, even rivals of Tampa or teams that you would think would be huge homers can admit that they’re just on a different level this year (so far).

But if they don’t win it, or at least get to the Final and a game 6 or 7 it’s gonna be a major disappointment for the franchise and fans.

 

People think about hockey quite a bit differently than they did a decade ago. Back then, if a defenceman led the league in stats like hits and blocked shots, he would be thought of as a hard-nosed, stay-at-home defenceman and earn millions.

The way people talk about hockey now reminds me of soccer, in that possession is the most important trait -- now, if a defenceman has a lot of hits and blocked shots, it's implied that the puck is in his own end a lot and he doesn't have control of it. You can't hit or block a shot if you don't (oops) have the puck. Now, the best defence is a good offense, which Karlsson accomplishes by maintaining possession.

Blocked shots are obviously good because they’re blocks, but if you’re constantly blocking shots then you don’t have the puck and you’re not in the offensive zone so you’re not controlling the flow of the game. Right?
