So like, they're okay with losing him for nothing? Obviously they're good without him but sheesh, get some defense

Does Toronto retain his rights for next season if he doesn't sign or will he be open season for the rest of the league?

Not sure the structure of NHL contracts since it seems like most are paid out evenly over the length of the deal, but I believe Toronto has a bunch of cap space this year so I wonder if they could have loaded him for like $25M this year and then the next 5-6 be at $4-5M per?

Of course he’d have to be okay with that but they’re gonna be in a crunch with next years deals so might as well use the space this year if they could have gone that route.

We have his rights until he’s like 27.

You can’t vary the annual average value of a contract, only how much money is paid out each year.

So using your exemple, the aav would still be somewhere around 8-9M counting against the cap.

Just saw a teeet that said Toronto could make him sit out the next 5 years if they wanted to...?

Obviously they probably wouldn’t want to do that but I assume that means they retain his rights

Interesting. Makes it easier to follow contracts. NBA/NFL ones always kind of confused me since they change yearly (usually going up a few million) so I never remember or get a good grasp of what someone is being paid and how much cap they take up

Illegal. The difference in salary between any two years can’t exceed 50%.

And the cap hit would be whatever the average annual salary is.

Thanks for the info! Is the difference specific to one contract?

For example could they have signed him to a one year deal worth let’s say $25M and then next year signed him to a 4-5 year deal worth $5M per?

(Granted he’s under contract for this current year so it wouldn’t work to sign him to 25M next year but just saying as an example)

There’s also an upper limit on cap hit/salary, which I believe is around 16M. Additionally since Nylander is an RFA as opposed to a UFA, he would need to be qualified next year (basically meaning we retain his rights without formally giving him a contract - standard stuff for any Rfa) and qualifying offers are required to be the prior year’s salary + 10%. So a hypothetical max 1 year contract also means he’d carry a 16M tag the following year as well. Of course he could always sign a smaller contract despite being qualified, but I don’t think anyone would risk that with Willy. We could also just not qualify him at all, but then we lose his rights and he becomes a UFA.

    Not surprised.

Everyone is tradeable, everyone is boo-able (regardless of sport, no one is safe).

Jones with a crazy stick save, and then giving up a super weak goal to a D-man who has never scored before.
