I just wish we still had Allen Robinson. He may never be as good as 2015 again, but Bortles knew how to throw to him better than he knows how to throw to lil speedy guys.

Bengals win again by the same score 34-23. Extrapolating this hard data over a 16 game season, they will score 544 points this season, which is best for 7th all time. 2-0 best record in the NFL and leader of the AFC North. Super Bowl confirmed.

    /s

As for actual takeaways from last night's game...

    PROS

    - the O line looked much better this week after allowing Margus goddamn Hunt to sack Dalton twice last week. No sacks allowed
    - AJ Green is the Messiah, I just wish he would stop fumbling
    - Tyler Boyd looked great, maybe he can actually be a decent WR2
    - defense is flying to the ball. Teryl Austin made this a point of emphasis and I see that it's already working
    - Jessie Bates and Sam Hubbard were excellent picks. Marvin usually never plays rookies but these guys deserve to see the field

    CONS

    - stupid penalties in the endzone twice put the ball on the 1 yard line
    - offense looked much worse without Mixon in the game. It's like night and day.
    - Billy Price injury. I hate Thursday games :(
    - John Ross was a ghost
    - Dre Kirkpatrick in general
    - typical Bengals playing one half of good football

Didn't expect to be 2-0 but after last year's start it's a great feeling.

These were my favorite parts. The Hunt sacks were HILARIOUS. “Oh you weren’t happy with my production over the past 4 years? Here’s your 2.5 sacks back, bitches”.

And the bottom is the truest statement ever about the Bengals and why they are directly average every goddamn season haha.

Maybe Marvin Lewis is a great pre-gameplanner who is terrible at adjusting on the fly once the flow of events changes. (Sounds like he suffers from anxiety).

it's true. He doesn't make halftime adjustments at all. Luckily last week the team decided to suck in the first half and then play their good half on the back end.

and he was so close to getting let go last season. But no, they had to go and win the last 2 games of the season and get Buffalo to the playoffs and save his job.

At least Dalton gets free beer and wings for life in Buffalo.

note: please don't take this as actually defending Lewis. also, the bigger blunder is that Lewis and Cincy have NEVER WON A SINGLE GODDAMN PLAYOFF GAME.

if i recall, because i started looking it up the other day and then stopped to do something more fun, the Bengals only won like 30% of their games in the 14+ years before Lewis became head coach. i think they had 2 winning seasons (of like, 9-7) in that span. Lewis has been a model of consistency for the franchise. i mean, for a long while, and even this year, they were penciled into the playoffs and possibly winning the division. that NEVER happened before he got there. i think we forget just how truly awful that franchise was before Lewis.

also, does changing a coach mean a change for the better? maybe the Bengals should be happy with where they're at instead of dumping Lewis and trying again. look at the Lions. Caldwell, after one game with the Big Beard as HC, looks like a fucking magician and the Lions are headed for a top 3 pick it seems. maybe the same happens with Caldwell, but he was "successful" in Detroit but the owners and fans thought they could do better (they can't).

maybe that's why Cincy sticks with Lewis all this time?

I mean, i get the whole argument of "well they're consistently good" but the flip-side of that is also "well, they're consistently not great." Not winning a playoff game in 14 years? What good is getting in? If you're a team and your true aspiration is a Super Bowl, then you at some point just have to say "this guy is never gonna get it done for us." and find the next guy who will.

Put a 3rd way....loook at the coaches who have been hired since Marv got the job. The ones listed above with rings are a good start. McVay and Reid ain't too shabby either. Doug Pederson? Yes please. All opportunities missed out on because they were committed to a guy who's the Subway of sub shops. Never good, but consistently okay at least.

    p.s. Hue sucks too.

I forgot Fowler had two sacks and a third hit/hurry on Brady in the first half of the AFCCG, that’s nuts haha. No one does that. Nate Solder couldn’t handle Fowler’s ugly, scrappy pass rushing style I guess haha

We get Fowler back don’t we? Wasn’t it a one game suspension?

The problem is that Mike Brown always holds onto players/coaches way longer than he should. It took them forever to get rid of their OC Bob Bratkowski (close friend of his) back in the late 2010's when he clearly needed to go. He finally let go of OL line coach Paul Alexander after 24 goddamn years this offseason. They always promote coordinators from within (Ken Zampese replaced Hue, Paul Guenther replaced Zimmer), because Brown is loyal to a fault.

HOWEVER, that has changed in these past few years. Zampese was fired early last year after the Bengals didn't score a touchdown until like week 3 and Lazor was promoted. Even that was a huge shift from the status quo. Getting Frank Pollack as an OL coach and Teryl Austin as the DC this offseason may not sound like much, but for a team that always promotes from within and hardly ever goes with outside hires, it was exciting. That's what Bengals fans get excited about.

Marvin definitely pulled the team out of the persona they acquired during the Lost Decade that was the 90's where the franchise was steeped in a deep losing culture. He deserves credit for that, if nothing else. Those were dark times.

Sproles is such a fantastic player. He's been a thorn in our side forever.

I'm going to try and tally up his stats against us over the years. Seems like he always went on a HoF tear when we play him.

I meant like during the game when stuff is happening haha. I honestly can’t pick a winner either. I am surprised how many people think we can win though, thought everyone would be betting against us now that Bortles has come back down to earth.

What worries me is, most of our success on offense against y’all happened through our runningbacks. We threw to Grant and Yeldon for several long gains, and Fournette straight up ran over Van Noy constantly on his way to first downs. Bortles didn’t really do anything lol, his numbers were good but I kind of doubt we can recreate that. Belicheck will have a whole new plan this time.
