Depends on how you define success, stats based then sure he's not very successful, but he has more playoff wins than anyone in the AFC not named Brady, Rivers, Roethlisberger, and Luck (by 1)

I can't imagine people using playoff wins as a serious metric for anything when it comes to evaluating a single player.

Bortles is not good. Stafford is. However Bortles played in an AFC championship last year because they were able to build a great team around him, because he's just good enough to win games for them. He could easily be the next Dilfer, Johnson, etc.

I don't know how many times it needs to be said but apparently the several times I did wasn't enough - it is NOT about a player's ability. It is about their VALUE.

it would be very, very interesting to see this for all positions for Super Bowl teams (winner and loser).

like, would every team have a top 5 paid LT? would every team have a bottom 5 paid SS? would there be any patterns at all? this type of number stuff fascinates me.

I think it'll be interesting to see those results, but I think it's going to be a 'correlation does not imply causation' kind of situation in that taking the numbers from it and projecting it on current teams, for example, wouldn't lead to any results really.

Please explain to me how Philly is going to be that team ? Howie hasn't showed signs of overpaying unless you're talking about Wentz.

I get the argument, but that shit load of money Cousins got could have been the difference for the Jags actually winning the SB considering they would have a good team around a good QB.

the next few years will be interesting and i feel like they could shift the tide of QB contracts.

let's say the next 4-5 Super Bowl winners all win with QB's on their rookie deals / less than $15M per year money. will teams stop paying a high price for a QB and use that money instead of build up other areas, such as defense line like Philly did? because eventually, when you're paying a QB $25-30M a season, you don't have the luxury of having a stellar team around them unless you hit on every late draft pick.

Seahawks won because they had Russell for 12 dollars those years. Now, and coming up, they have to pay him many millions and now you don't have that money on other positions. many would say part of the Patriots being so successful is Brady being on the cheap end of a deal. also helps he's amazing, but if he was getting paid $25-30M a season would the Pats still be constant AFC title contenders? who knows.

in an alternative world, Rodgers gets paid $15M a year and Thompson spent all that cap room on defensive players and o-line and the Packers have 3-5 more rings. instead he paid Rodgers and did very little with that cap and they lose in the playoffs every year.

Im with this mentality. Any route to success can be valid if you can coach around your strengths and draft a balanced group of late round steals and early round rare-ability studs.

Also wanna say people assume that, just because a QB isn’t good overall, that means they are never good. It’s not black and white, it’s far more fluid than that, there’s a lot of varying performances in the spectrum of a player’s ability.

Bortles definitely has excellent games out of nowhere. Randomly his accuracy will just be “on”, and the team will have momentum, & our playcalling will be in a rhythm to the point where the defense has to watch for other things... and sometimes he’ll straight up be motivated to beat a better QB.

We say Bortles sucks mostly because he’s so inconsistent that it averages out to him hurting the team just as often as he helps.

But with the help of our defense to give us a security blanket, and with our strong running game giving him a lot of chances on long drives - we take pressure off him. He doesn’t have to be perfect for as long, doesn’t have to vary his game as much to fool the defense.

The less he has to throw the more patient he is, and the less he fucks up basically. Our offense also encourages him to be a dual threat which settles him down and converts 3rd downs he wouldn’t have achieved with his arm.

Even getting *good Bortles* SOME of the time gives us a chance to beat anyone. And Marrone seems to know this, and calls a patient game with a lot of play action / misdirection to squeeze what he can out of Bortles’ raw talent, like making lemonade out of a lemon.
