Without putting players in the context of eras, then just rank their passer ratings or total touchdowns in a list and call it a day. How boring and ignorant.

 

Putting any stock in passer rating is pretty lame haha.

That would mean Tony Romo is somehow the fourth best ever. Which, lol.

Exactly my point. People seem to be looking at one stat here or there and don't consider the context.

I don't agree with @Randall Mentzos posts totally, but at least he's bringing up valid arguments for his side.

Debates on any subject without considering context are pointless.

 

And attaching an asterisk to any accomplishment due to era is equally silly.

 

Oh yeah, I mean, Jerry Rice is, at worst, the second best football player of all time. AB is not beating him.

 

If you ignore everything else I've said on here, sure.

 

I think the only competition for greatest ever is between Brady, Rice, and Taylor.

I'd put Rice at #1 since he's not only the best at his position but is head and shoulders above anyone close to him.

Then again, Taylor was such an animal that rules had to be changed to keep up with him. Plus, I believe Belichick has said he's the greatest player he's ever coached and that's crazy high praise.

Or maybe the stat is actually a pretty good frame of reference for efficiency and we should just admit Romo was a great “regular season” QB. He was. He just choked when the stakes were raised.

Fourth best QB of all time? No. You gotta win important games for that. Marino isn’t even in my top 5 because of that.

Fourth most efficient and productive on a per snap basis during the regular season? That’s honestly believable. Dude put up like 340 yards and 3 TD on a regular ass basis. Granted he’s had Bryant and Witten in their primes to help.

 

I'll go to my grave defending Romo for all the shit he put up with his whole career. From bad coaching and management to unnecessary levels of criticism and hatred from fans, the man did a great job of ignoring that and focusing on playing great without ever snapping back at people.

He definitely wasn't perfect and has a handful of moments that are heartbreaking for Cowboys fans, but he was an incredible player and leader.

He has an episode of "A Football Life" late next month and I'm confident that it will make me tear up.

Yes, Blake Bortles in 2017 probably had more pass plays that reached their goal than Elway in the early 90s.

It’s just the era though. Does not mean he’s better. Just means pass plays are schemed open more often, and PI gets called if you do anything past 5 yards. Bortles probably would’ve been much worse than Elway in 1990 when defenses could be more physical, no-huddle was a foreign concept, and OC’s didn’t have even half as many ways to trick the defense.

Compare QB ratings within a season, though, and they often PERFECTLY reflect which QB have been the best passers.

 

He's the Gretzgy of football...where his stats are just so far ahead of everyone else that it gets a little laughable. Dude had 10 straight seasons of 1000+ yards. Larry Fitzgerald would need a whole 2nd career to match him in TD's.

Tom Brady is the best QB of all-time...but, you can put Peyton, etc all right there with him. Brady doesnt even lead most statistical categories. Rice holds ever receiving record, and in TD's and yards, he has like 50% more than anyone else.

 

Because I'm a crazy person, I put this graph together to see where Romo ranked among other quarterbacks during his career (2006-2016) and found the results pretty interesting.

The white columns are the percentages/rates/whatever for each player over that time span and the colored columns represent where each player ranked from 1st to 20th, and then I did an average of those rankings and plugged it in at the end.

It's all sorted by the Avg Rk best to worst and for the most part paints an accurate picture of fair quarterback rankings over those 11 seasons.

 

Tbh I wouldn't even have Peyton second.

 

Manning was dominant for literally his whole career.

The only player I could even possibly put above him at #2 is Joe Montana but he didn’t have quite the longevity. Montana getting usurped by Young would be like if Manning was healthy when the Colts drafted Luck and he never had that record Broncos year.

If you wanna get really revisionist and facetious about who is most dominant “for the era”, Otto Graham is above Tom Brady. Dude went to 10 straight championships and won 8 of them or something like that.

EDIT: it was 7 out of 9 straight. 1946-1955, Graham took the Browns to the championship and won all but two.

 

So, uh, Panthers need to trade for a LG. Badly.
