Im' hearing 3 years, 18 mill AAV, and only about half that guaranteed. NO dead money after 2019.

Guys I actually fucking love this deal. Best case scenario. I take Bortles at 18 over Cousins at what, 26, quite easily, ESPECIALLY considering we can move on in two years if he plateaus and stops improving

I was so scared we were gonna pay Bortles 25 AAV or some dumb shit

    The rivalry is back on

I understand the argument around not paying QBs, but I can’t help but be excited that the best team in the division has Blake Bortles as their QB during the golden years of this elite defense

To be fair, I think you’ve liked 99% of what the Jags have done dating back to the ap days.

I don’t fully understand while you have this insane monster defense that you wouldn’t pay a guy like Kirk another 8M per who has shown he has the ability to play at a high level.

I think if you had Kirk this last season, you beat NE going away. Not the Eagles tho sorry.

Eh, Bortles is finally improving with a stable team around him. A cheap and non-committal contract means we can keep our defense on the books, while still leaving us open to patiently draft a QB sometime in the next 2-3 years desperation-free. Way better than if we had moved on, forced it and just reached for the best QB we could get this year.

He has the chance to become the QB he always wanted to be, we have the chance to replace him if he fails instead of having him eat cap space we need for Ramsey & Yannick's extensions.

  8. Jacksonville is gonna piss away having an elite defense because they want to keep Bortles around for a few more years

Crazy how last off-season we were a bottom feeding team, now we are so good we can't afford to develop a QB.

Meh. I just think it makes it easier for us to draft a QB without being desperate or rushing it, or pulling some dumbass trade... we just let the right value come along and either get rid of Bortles after two years if he develops, or otherwise Bortles keeps winning and proves he deserves to stay.

If we draft somebody we can groom him under Bortles the RIGHT way, sit him with no pressure on a team that knows how to block and run and play defense... and then shed Bortles so we don't have trouble resigning our defense. If Bortles stays on his trajectory, then we solved our QB problem already at below market value.

Win/win, it's not a win-now move but it's a sustainability move IMO. Paying Cousins 25+ per season over several years certainly makes us shed an important defensive player or two and I don't think Cousins is THAT good to be worth it.

I think if we had ARob this last season we beat NE going away. WITH Bortles. He threw to zero WR1s and zero TE1s and still elevated his game against the Seahawks to get into the playoffs and then against the Steelers and Patriots IN the playoffs. Credit where its due. He had ugly games but he was not the reason we lost important ones, and if anything played better when it mattered more.

The Bortles deal is good. Kinda stunned he signed it...they owed him $19mil anyway, so he only get $7mil more in guaranteed money here. They could still cut him after 2018-19 and only eat a little dead money. Its way less than he'd get on 5th year tender + a franchise tender in 2019

Whoever signs McCarron will probably get a similarly cheap deal and those are worth the risk. Osweiler got $37mil guaranteed by comparison, which made his 2nd season basically fully guaranteed as well.

Teams give up on their young QBs too early in their careers anyway. Might as well see what Bortles does with a little bit of consistency when it comes to coaching staff and offensive system. It's a good deal and if Bortles improves, it'll be an incredible deal. If it doesn't, little to no harm done. Just move on.

I'm not particularly surprised Bortles signed the deal either. He's the people's QB.

And year 5 is usually the point where QBs hit their stride. Like even a guy who was good from Day 1 like Russell Wilson made a huge leap in years 4,5,and 6.

Also, the Jags coaches trusted the receiving core even less than they trusted Bortles last year. All he had was dudes in the backfield to throw to most of the time. Spending money on someone like Kirk Cousins when you have a young QB would be pointless when you can use that money to improve other parts of the team.

Well at least my "Bortles plays just well enough to earn another contract and Randall sells himself on it only to be heartbroken the following year" prediction seems on pace to come true.

No, no, no, I've been told that $18 million AAV for an average to below average QB (depending on the week) is awful and the player should be cut immediately
