The best gameplan is to sign bad players, make them good players, then let bad teams pay them lots of money.

    Nope. Supporter

Best gameplan is to draft defense in the first round every year since 2010 and still not have a good defense

The best plan is to add Calais Campbell, Malik Jackson, Jalen Ramsey, A.J. Bouye, Barry Church, Tashaun Gipson, Myles Jack, and Yannick Ngakoue to your starting defensive roster all at once in a little over a year's time. Clearly. B-)

I will preface this by saying I'm prone to Mariota hyperbole given our shared college careers, however I do take a few issues here.

On downfield passes: The idea that he doesn't throw them is a misconception. In 17-18 he threw 93 passes of 15+ yards, that's more than Drew Brees, the same number as Cam Newton, and 2 fewer than Matt Ryan. He was also one of the more efficient QBs on those throws in the league last year (The 2017-18 Deep Ball Project).

On his rushing numbers: He's been playing in a stone age offense his entire pro career thus far, with very few read option/RPO opportunities and has battled various lower body injuries, especially last season. The sprained MCL he suffered kept him in the pocket for the majority of the year, hampering his all around game.

On Accuracy: It's been a trademark of his game since college. The dude flat out didn't throw picks. I understand the critique that the Kelly/Helf offense relied on a lot of quick passes and underneath routes but I'll post this thread again detailing numerous instances of him fitting balls into tight windows often in multiple coverage. Lots of dropped balls here (Only Brees and Rodgers were more accurate than Marcus Mariota in 2017.) + per PFF he was in the upper echelon of efficiency under pressure

Having watched every Titans game last year (which was basically masochism, they were beyond frustrating) the offense would spin its wheels trying to play "smash mouth" football for the first 3 quarters and go down 3 scores, then once Mularkey would actually run some no huddle (and in the case of that chiefs game) let Marcus call plays on the fly, they could actually move the ball.

Anyhow, just gotta stick up for my guy.
The dude is an elite talent, all you gotta do is look at the season he had in 16-17 and consider how hampered he was by an abysmal offensive scheme/injuries/poor receiver play last year.

AFC South is gonna be wild this year, looking forward to the Titans Jags games.

Idk how you don't match that, it's basically a 1yr guaranteed deal and it's not like the bears have much wr depth

You're referencing an article that has Deshone Kizer, Jacoby Brissett and Dak Prescott all in the TOP FIVE. Whatever criteria this study uses is obviously not an accurate frame of reference for which QBs have been the most effective.

They call plenty of play action bootlegs and rollouts. While the RPO has gained popularity in the NFL, if you need college concepts like that to succeed at the pro game and can't get comfortable in the pocket, the onus of that falls on the QB more than it does the coaches.

NFL defensive lines play great containment... and if you roll Mariota out every play, you basically put your entire passing game in a predictable box, based entirely off half field reads. The point of pocket passing is to use the whole field, so defenses have more things to account for. If Mariota still can't do that very well in his fourth year, thats a problem that limits your offensive diversity. Even Mike Vick had to learn pocket passing.

Accuracy is not a one dimensional thing though. Putting the proper arc on the ball, and adding just enough velocity to get the ball there on time, are every bit as important as the ball landing where you want it to land. Mariota is a see it - stick it QB. He can throw bullets to an open guy but he wont anticipate touch throws. You don't have that 3D perspective with him. Which is why he settles for underneath yards, and only 13 touchdowns (you cant throw late in the red zone, less space means the passing lanes close quickly.)

I used this same argument to defend Blake Bortles a couple years ago. Bottom line is its just easier to pass the ball late in a losing game when defenses are tired and playing looser coverage. You'll find that this line of logic is true for just about every QB. Changing up to a no huddle offense late in a game is not the same as calling uptempo the whole game.

Bortles posted better numbers and scores with more injuries to his WR corps - we were missing our starting X, Y , and Z receiver much of the year as well as 7 weeks of an injured Fournette whose YPG and YPC were almost cut in half.

I'm proud of that but I wouldn't dare call him an "elite talent". I would put him above Mariota though :-p

You can make excuses if you want... But if he was really elite he would succeed regardless. And hed also NEVER post so few TD (13 is seriously anemic compared to the 30-40 elite QB typically throw) and he certainly wouldnt throw more INTs than scores under any circumstances.

Yeah I'm hoping you get the real Jags this year and its competitive, and we don't just lay down like the last two games lol
