I just think you can’t look retrospectively at contracts. As myself, @Fucking Dustin and @tkamB already pointed out, most those elite QBs contracts were top-3 expensive when they were first signed. The league’s contracts have just inflated since then while QB talent hasn’t kept up with the prior generation. Almost no one who is 27-32 is even close to as good as the Brees/Rodgers/Brady/Rivers/Roethlisberger /Manning/whatever group. I think Jimmy G is the only quarterback at contract-extension age who COULD BE that good lol, and that’s why I’m fine with him getting PAID

Okay but again....Foles just won. Brady won last year. How many QBs that are paid the highest end up winning the Super Bowl? NOT many.

It's just not a smart idea to pump that much money into a guy who hasn't even started an entire season. That's absolutely absurd.

Why do people think it's so easy to just build a team good enough to win a Super Bowl around shitty QBs?

The fact that, despite clarifying multiple times, you guys can't remove "good" from "overpaid" kind of shows the problem I'm talking about haha.

That’s not who Jimmy G is haha. Had they given CJ Beathard an extension that’s signing the first guy you see that you like.

With Jimmy, the 49ers struck gold (and they would know HAHAHAHHAHAHAAHAHAH... ahem. Excuse me) and they’re not gonna let anyone else mine it.

They purchased the rights to continue developing a QB who has shown them advanced skills that are impossible to project from a draft player, and that are basically impossible to find in free agency. They literally have, in their hands, something even rarer than a #1 overall pick becuase most #1 overall QB still don’t develop mentally to that extent, usually they’ll be 33 years old and still only about as good as Cam Newton or Alex Smith or Eli Manning (all three technically were #1 overall picks.). You have a guy who’s already smarter than those QB? Who also has a perfect release and very consistent touch/accuracy? Don’t let him go ANYWHERE ELSE.

Despite the fact that Mallett, Cassel, and Brissett failed to glean that next-level vision by learning from BB and Brady, it’s obvious by the contract numbers that they felt, with 6 weeks of games AND extensive practice and film study that they got exactly what you hope to get when you trade for a Pats backup.

Keep in mind they know more about Jimmy G than we do, maybe he’s a goddamn scholar in the film room and is teaching the rest of the offense shit he’s learned from being in New England. Maybe the coaches are shocked at how much he already knows and how much more they can do with their offense.

Is it not conceivable that teams who sign the elite QB first, may take a year or two to fix the rest of their team before becoming competitive? And by that time the QB is no longer a top contract?

It took us 4 years to make our team good enough to win despite Bortles so idk pick your poison dude

Yeah, like I think the Redskins overpaid for Alex Smith collectively on that trade...but a lot of that is that they gave away a young, cheap starting CB and a draft pick to THEN pay a guy $71mil guaranteed. 49ers gave up a 2nd rounder to move from the #2 pick to the #9 pick AND pay him $130+ mil if all goes well. Those moves might work out...and the 49ers literally have to spend fuck you money this offseason (browns too).

But the argument is probably that the Redskins should have kept Fuller, let COusins walk, taken the 3rd rounder next year, moved forward with Colt McCoy and either drafted or signed another QB to compete. And used the $23mil in cap space to sign help at S, LB, O-line, etc.

Exactly. Washington is a great example haha. Thank you.

Overpaid compared to what? The deals guys signed 4 years ago where the salary cap was 40 mil less? It's an absurd argument.

Like shit Matthew Stafford was a #1 overall pick. Jameis Winston showed advanced anticipation & going through progressions, but he’s also a rapist... and he’s nowhere near the accuracy or discipline you need to be consistent.

Your chances of finding a QB who can become as good as Jimmy already is, in free agency or any draft are so small. I completely understand a GM paying whatever he needs to pay to get that done and not lose out on something he might not find again.

I’m sorry but a team that “moves forward” with Colt McCoy is never winning 8 games

Shit this is the reason the Cardinals overpaid Carson Palmer. Yeah that was ugly and he was never quite worth it... but you’re out of your damn mind if you think Kevin Kolb / John Skelton was bringing playoff success back to Arizona.

That's cool. A team with Alex Smith and no room to improve isn't winning the Super Bowl hahaha.

So, I find Spotrac useful for this...they'll compare statistical performance + comparable contracts and create a "Market Value". Obviously Jimmy G is a hard comparison, because he sat for a few years, only started a few games, etc. But statistically he's no more proven than a lot of guys making $16-18mil/yr. So to pay him $10mil/yr more than that is overpaying based on production.

We can even directly compare in this offseason, since Alex Smith got a new deal. Is Alex Smith better? Hard to say because Jimmy has only played 5 games. But is Jimmy $25mil better over the course of 5 years if they play out their deals? Because thats what the 49ers just said.

Which ties into this. This is completely possible. And in a world where Jimmy G is a free agent, this is the move they have to make

But right now, they spent $50mil more than they HAD to. And is Jimmy G turning down a 5yr/$140mil/$80mil guaranteed deal next off-season?

Also, that Brock Osweiler contract that blew up on Houston. That had $37mil guaranteed. Jimmy's got double that...meaning he HAS to play our 3 years to not be one of those $20mil dead cap hits.

Its a HUGE risk that seems marginal, even considering the 49ers cap space

  14. Apparently Norwell wants to be the highest paid guard in the league.

    Sheesh.

Just want to point out that the year the Broncos did win it, they had AWFUL quarterback play

Oh yeah lmao. But not with Elway!

Really though his supporting cast was STUPID good when they won back to back SB in 98-99

Pretty much this. Ive watched that Redskins team, I hear their sports talk radio every day. They are 2 years away from seriously competing. They have no WRs, no consistent RB, a patchwork O-line whose only guaranteed stud is constantly hurt, an elite TE who needs to retire from a scrambled brain. And thats the offense, which is their positive side of the ball.

Hell, the Redskins were 7-9 with Cousins and just traded for a worse version. They're not gonna be 8-8 with Alex Smith....which is why paying him money is very dumb

Players should never get paid based on past production, only future potential.

They are a fascinating example of the "fuck it all, lets win a Super Bowl" strategy versus building a perennial playoff contender. They gave these massive back loaded deals to defensive players so they could have the best possible team. Good enough to overcome Peyton sucking.

That piper has now come calling and they'll have to cut a lot of veterans this offseason. But they won a Super Bowl.

    Which you estimate from?

I mean, obviously its a mix...but Jimmy G now has to be an MVP candidate year in and out to justify that contract

  24. CarpetElf

chorus's #3 oklahoma city comets fan Prestigious

Yeah like, is Jimmy G projected to be the greatest player of all time? It will be a miracle if anyone ever comes close to Manning or Brady so the "future potential" argument is completely debunked right there.

Luckily most of those veterans turned into ass so it's no real loss
