The argument isnt that one single player destroys the cap. Its that the 3 or 4 quality starters you can get instead are more valuable. And that teams waste money and/or draft picks in search of that unnecessary piece.

Vikings are a middling example because of Bradford, but imagine that team with $18mil more in cap space and a 1st rounder. Their first rounder clinched the super bowl with a fumble recovery. They kept guys like Latavius Murray who otherwise might have been cut with a $30mil/yr QB...which was critical when Dalvin Cook went down. They signed key O-lineman in the offseason, etc.

49ers obviously have the cap space to do this; but it makes it incredibly difficult for teams without that space to sign non-top 5 QBs to more reasonably deals.

Then you would be wrong, historically speaking.

    Also, no haha

Bad coach and not really that good of a team. It's weird that you think of Cincinnati before, you know, Jacksonville lol.

Now imagine being unable to do that because of Bortles. Do you think we get as far?

    Are they?

That's fine. I don't set aside more money than someone is worth haha.

Yeah, true. All you guys need to do is draft a corner in the first two rounds this year and you're good to go.

We spent the money on free agents becuase we had a bad QB and needed to compensate and make the rest of the team dominant.

SF doesn’t even need to do that.

Idk I feel like it's so easy to manipulate cap space that it's a tough thing to worry about in the long run. Osweiler is the exception to the rule and only because he was so horrifically bad and such a pain in the ass that he forced himself to be jettisoned into the sun.

We'll probably draft one in the 2nd when we use our insane amount of 3rd round picks to move up!

All I'm saying is there is no actual argument. I do not accept 'that's the way it is' as a reason to do something. Who won the Super Bowl? Wasn't Stafford. MVP? Wasn't Carr. Conference Finalists? Highest paid dude there was the 14th highest paid in the league.

    Don't pay your QBs haha.

The thing is, it isn't like you're trading certainty for uncertainty. Those "3-4 quality starters" you try to get can just as easily bust and they are at far less valuable positions. Betting on a QB is nearly always worth the risk. Example is Cleveland that has passed on taking the risk on top QBs to add draft picks that have turned into a whole lot of nothing.

I remember when people were saying the Saints were in cap hell a couple years ago.. and then signed Byrd to a monster contract days later. Teams rarely, if ever, lose, or fail to sign, a player because of it.

My “actual argument” is that if we had Jimmy G we wouldn’t need to sink 260 million dollars into our defense in two offseasons. Because then our offense would be our strong suit and we don’t need to force 18 turnovers to win a game

So yeah who cares if you can’t afford other expensive free agents? When Jimmy G is already undefeated with your still-developing squad full of rookie contract players.

All teams are bad at drafting.

There isn't an actual reason why you can tell me Jimmy G is worth more than Tom Brady or Aaron Rodgers. It boils down to "that's the way it is." And that's fine haha. That's a difference in opinion. I'm just saying that historically speaking, teams who invest the most in QBs don't actually get the most out. I mean shit Minny had two first rounders invested in guys and it was the UDFA that led them to where they went. This is not a good year to try and make the argument that QBs are the end-all most valuable part of the roster. Give me Case Keenum on the Jaguars over Kirk Cousins on the Colts.

I'm not saying QBs shouldn't be paid, but I do think these back breaking deals need to stop. Stafford is a great QB stuck on a cursed team, but he still shouldn't be paid that kind of money. The NFL isn't the NBA. NFL teams have over 30 more players on their team. Gotta spread the wealth to win a championship.

I mean, he isn't worth more than Tom Brady or Aaron Rodgers right now because they're signed players. If Tom Brady or Aaron Rodgers went "Actually I think I'll test the market" they'd be offered a LOT more hahaha.

    This.

And Rodgers and Brees contracts were ENORMOUS at the time. Brady is the only elite QB who got a contract below market value, which makes him more of an outlier than a worthwhile comparison. I mean the Pats also convinced McD to back out of a supposedly done deal so who knows what they did to get Brady to sign $20 mill AAV. Maybe after that many Super Bowls and sponsorships he just doesn’t need his pride reaffirmed by more money.

Only reason Rodgers and Brees contracts look smaller now is because inflation is that nuts. But that’s true of almost every position group, “Hot” young players getting paid way more than more effective and consistent veterans.

Potential earns you more money than resume’ for some reason. I guess cause winning long term in the future is more important to almost every team than winning now.

Dude Jimmy G is undefeated with SF’s CURRENT ROSTER.

He is MAKING them a good team almost by himself. I don’t know how much clearer I can make this. The dude’s WR1 is Marquise fucking Goodwin and his best TE is not even Brent Celek but his lesser known brother

  25. CarpetElf

He hasn't started an entire year lol. You're arguing he should be the highest paid player in history based off less than a year. That's INSANE.
