You guys are also assuming the Panthers are expecting Smith to be a pro bowler. His contract doesn’t warrant those expectations. If he goes for 400-500 yards and 4 TDs it’s a good year. And that’s not unrealistic. Also, we went 15-1 with Philly Brown and Ted Ginn as our top WRs.

You're a naysayer about everything except Donte Moncrief for some reason and it blows my mind. I just do not understand why THIS is the move you're optimistic about... of all the things weve done to improve our team and you were skeptical of, you're feeling positive about a downgrade at our worst position last year.

I've called the contract bad haha. It's just a one year deal so it's just bad judgement without actually affecting us beyond this year. I've also said he's not good. I've just also said he has been playing with back-up level QBs at best for a decent portion of the last few seasons and when he had Luck he had 1,000 yards and 13 touchdowns in one and a half seasons.

 

To be fair during that Luck era the best non-Colts CB in the AFC South was Kareem Jackson

Now there's Ramsey, Bouye, Colvin, Mathieu, Butler, Jackson, Ryan, Joseph if he has his weird old man resurgence again, Johnson if he's still alive

 

Oh yeah, for sure haha. I'm not optimistic about it at all. I'm just trying to be honest about it haha. Moncrief for one year is not even CLOSE to as bad as Lee for four and more money.

 

Guaranteed money is the important part of the contract. Base salary does matter but when it comes to, not being able to get out of a contract, its the guaranteed that causes problems. Lee wasnt guaranteed that much. Its like 4 million per season on average and probably front loaded.

If we were worried guaranteeing ARob a franchise tag this year would limit us, or if we were worried that 14 Mill GTD he got would have put us in cap hell (I doubt it) then why did we pay Moncrief 10 GTD? It just makes no sense.

 

It's weird because I agree with both of you, Moncrief for 1 year isn't as bad as Lee for 4 years, and Moncrief for 1 year is still god awful because it completely contradicted the whole reason for not re-signing/retaining Allen Robinson

 

Because it's a one year deal! It means nothing.

When I said I wanted Lee in FA I wanted him as a WR4 not as a WR1 for 4 years

A franchise tag with the intention to re-sign means that Robinson gets to prove he's worth MORE money than initially offered. Now we have a ONE year window instead of a two year window. It's significantly harder to fit a larger contract into that one year window. We would've had to front-load the deal to make sure we can get our 2020 contracts squared away. Pushing that back a year makes it much harder to front load.
