They signed him to a team friendly contract, which he out produced. To ask him to take a pay cut his final year seems crappy to me. He deserves it from an overall contract aspect. You’re only thinking from an AAV perspective.

 

His deal was an extension that was pretty damn good at the time he got it

This is a sport where you want to win each year, not pay players with rose-tinted glasses on.

I want my team to win. This isn't some cutes-y "everyone gets a participation award" kind of league. If you're not playing well and/or constantly injured, you don't deserve to be paid highly for your position. Especially when there are 2 other players on your own team who are clearly better at everything than you are these days.

 

I don't get asking players to take a pay cut on the contract they and the team agreed to. Honor the contract. Same goes for when players whine in the middle of their contract and want to restructure.

When a player isn't playing at all or at a level at which they're expected for the amount of money they're getting, I don't see why it's a problem to renegotiate the contract.

 

I don't have a problem with a team asking a guy to take a pay cut or restructure but I also don't have a problem with that player telling the team to fuck off

If that's how rookie contracts worked in the NFL, I'd be more than happy to give him a huge contract, yes.
