It's crazy how fast the NFL has become a passing league.

When Jimmy Smith and Keenan McCardell retired around 2006, they were 11th & 16th all time in receiving yards.

Now they are 23rd and 33rd.

There were only 10 more productive receivers in NFL history than Jimmy Smith by 2007, and 12 years later there's now been 22 more productive receivers.

you don't have to do this, but it would be curious to know how many of those players came into the league 2007 and later. i'm guessing the majority (?) of the receivers that past him were already in the league for substantial years (ala Fitzgerald).

i don't disagree with your assessment, i'm more or less curious how FAST some receivers are climbing the all-time yards ladder.

They’re showing super bowl 43 on NFL network right now, it feels so much longer than 10 years ago that John Madden was a color commentator

I spent some of this morning watching game footage of Deion Sanders and Jerry Rice. Football gods.

There was a play where Deion Sanders was ahead of a WR, got behind him, jumped over him for the ball, caught it with one hand and used the other hand to push the WR’s helmet into the turf on his way down, lmao. That was a “fuck you” interception.

Im so glad you can find actual in-game footage from back then now. Highlights videos give you a limited perspective on what happened on the play.

For example, Jerry Rice was CRAZY good at beating press coverage & physical bumps downfield, no one could out muscle him and that’s something you don’t see in highlights. He used swim moves to get off the line, and knew how to plan his footwork while catching the ball so he could immediately bounce off a tackle.

A lot of old highlights are slowed down, as well. I like being able to see the real time speed & reaction time of players to truly appreciate the skill involved.

Highlights also give you no gauge of how consistently that player was effective and how often plays like that happened.

NFL trivia - two interesting things i learned from reading about Superbowl 34

    1) Did you guys know Donovan McNabb was the first QB to throw for more than 30 TD and less than 10 INT in a season?
lol. Wasn't Montana, Marino, Aikman, Young, Elway, Manning, Warner, Brady.... it was McNabb.

    2) Bill Belicheck coached Lawrence Taylor almost his whole career. I did NOT know that, he was the linebackers coach and then the defensive coordinator for NYG from 1981 - 1990. Belicheck has been an amazing defensive coach for a LONG, long, long, time. In the '80s he won two Superbowls as DC of the Giants.

The Browns did not fire Belicheck. That's when Art Modell moved the team.

    OH SHIT.

Belicheck was on the Pats coaching staff for one isolated year, a few years before he was their head coach.
He was Parcells' assistant HC and DB coach in 1996, and guess what they did? WENT TO THE SUPERBOWL

No wonder Robert Kraft traded a first round pick for him. Dude's resume was off the chain BEFORE he came to New England and won 6 out of 9 Superbowls.

It's also crazy that the Pats went from Bill Parcells, to Pete Carroll, to literally stealing Belicheck from their rival New York Jets. That's three HOF-level coaches in a row.

That's even more lucky than the Colts getting to go from Manning to Luck.

Peyton Manning loves Jim Bob. Probably has a lot to do with the hiring.

He basically got Gase the job in New York.
