Imagine lyrics as catching the ball, and music as running the ball.

To me it's like adding a great receiver to a run-first team. It's not the reason why the team is winning, it's not the focus of most the plays, but it certainly gives them a more complete strategy. However, a team really good at running the ball might not need great receivers to still be highly effective. Conversely, if a team has great receivers but can't run well at all they're probably doomed.

I'm mostly listening to music, to "listen" to music haha. Lyrics I maybe only pay attention to once in awhile unless it's a song that specifically has great lyrics. But that's never the reason I turned the song on in the first place. Like, I would rather read Bob Dylan lyrics in a book than listen to him squabble off-key about them over the same chords for 9 minutes

    Prestigious Prestigious

    Great analogy.

I've always been indifferent to "bad" lyrics but if they're great, then they can elevate a band to a whole other level. But there are plenty of incredible albums, bands, songs, etc... that I love that I couldn't care less what they're actually saying.

Precisely and totally this is how I feel

IF lyrics are TRULY cringy they start to bother me, because it's like come on as an artist you gotta have standards and you gotta have a filter... but most lyrics aren't horrible, just kinda bland.

This is one of my favorite parts about them tbh. Confident baritone voices haven't been a common thing in rock music since 80s post-punk. As a baritone myself I find that singing is a lot of fucking effort, because you have to use your upper range just to get into those tenor melodies that popular music has made ubiquitous. You can't control what vocal range you were born with, just gotta work with it. So to hear a guy with that range comfortably singing low and still being a clear "leader" of the music is kinda inspiring.

Yeah. For my project I've just gotten used to singing at the top of my range lol. My voice gets really "full" sounding and has a little rasp to it when I really push it, so I tend to like how it sounds in climactic moments.

Your vocal cords are muscles and you can actually "work them out" in a sense. The hardest part is, at the same time trying to play hard guitar parts, but also focus enough on my singing to belt out the higher notes firmly and not be flat.

It's easier for a tenor, those melodies come out with much less effort. Coheed and Cambria, that dude can sing whatever he wants easily while he's playing because he has so much range haha.

My biggest issue with it is, you can't hear low vocals live a lot of the time. Depending on the venue. So even if i record songs that stay more in my natural range, I still find myself ad libbing the melodies live, and singing higher just so my lyrics / voice can cut through the guitar and be heard.
