Traveling city to city for $100 gigs is a lot better when you’re a solo artist though ;)

But yeah 4-7 person bands shouldn’t tour unless they can get guarantees. That’s just too many people that gotta eat and keep their bills paid at home.

For me, I rarely make less than $100 at a gig and all that goes to me. So it’s a little easier.

My highest paid gig all time was $200

If I averaged all of the other gigs I played minus that one, I probably made an average of...$25?

Getting guarantees seems really hard. I almost think it’s smarter to build up an audience solo and once you can draw in multiple cities, then start taking the band and asking for guarantees. It’s such a tough sell when you don’t have much draw or history in that city.

In that movie internship, I got $125 for running a 750-capactiy prescreening for one of the Twilight movies. Honestly, I felt underpaid.

I wouldn’t count local shows. It’s just kind of a thing that local bands just get boned, most venues gotta give most the money to the touring bands / main attractions because that’s the main reason they are able to stay open in the first place.

Like that’s the ironic thing... local bands don’t get paid because that’s how much the “guarantees” cost. You gotta sell 40 $5 tickets just to make a humble $200 guarantee, and it’s hard to raise the price cause no one comes to local shows that cost $10-$12

    Nope. Supporter

Flights and Airbnb's booked for our New England trip that kind of evolved into more of an east coast thing because we had to change our plans and do it backwards lol

We're flying in to DC then going to Philly for the wedding then making our way up to Portland Maine

If any of ya'll got recommendations for things we absolutely need to do lmk we'll be in DC, Philly, RI, Boston, Portland, ME while also planning on making stops in CT and NH along the way for lunch or something

Like if I bring merch I make between $80-$200 per show on tour without asking for guarantees from the venue.

I’m lucky to make $50 at a local show though, even if I helped pack the place out. The only time I get paid locally is if it’s an all locals show that does really well. Otherwise, if I want money, I gotta try to get gigs playing mostly covers at restaurants & bars hah.

Playing locally is more about building your network and your brand. Getting some professional references who can vouch for you and some press, networking, hosting touring bands so that they’ll return the favor when you tour in their town.

I'm also not bad at networking because of the fact that I hate networking.

Promoters and agents love a guy they can actually shoot the shit with who isn't gonna kiss their ass all day. Bands however hate that.

But it also causes me to never ask for anything even though I prob could.

Idk, saying “yo, sick set man” is becoming a parody of itself at shows. I find myself having much better relations with bands when I feel like we just talked to each other & got along, and didn’t even make the whole interaction about music.

Likewise, I prefer a bit of mixed constructive criticism, rather than someone exalting my guitar playing for 5 minutes, even if it’s genuine how do you respond to that?

I can't even count the number of times I heard a bandmate tell another band that their set was "solid" hahahaha. It's my favorite backhanded compliment of all time
