I dunno man. I think you’re not giving yourself enough credit if you think there’s no way you could understand football strategy. All it is in general, is gaining leverage and fooling the opponent into getting out of position.

The complex part is there are literally thousands of ways to do that. But slowly you can teach yourself to recognize common concepts faster and faster, and once you do that then you start to notice all the wrinkles and variations of how they set up a certain expected look but do something unexpected.

I think certain things are harder to learn from film than others, for example blocking schemes are like 60% of every play and I still have SO much I don’t understand about that. But 3%? Come on. It’s deductive reasoning and training your brain to recognize patterns. Anyone can watch film and learn a lot about the game if they truly apply themselves.

Could you draw up yiur own gameplan? No. But can you at least figure out what coaches tendencies are and recognize the way they are trying to attack that specific opponent? Definitely.

Agreed. 3% is maybe for the casual fan. But for most people in this thread alone, I'd think that number would be a lot higher.

Maybe 3% is low, but i think of the four major sports, Football is by far the least understood sport by it's fans.

    That’s fair...

But this is also fair. I think that dudes that would actually watch film and watch plays 7-8 times just to grasp everything that happened, is a stark minority... compared to the huge swaths of Bud Light bros who don’t think for themselves in general and would let Mel Kiper write a new edition of the damn Bible for them.

Most of us in here are pretty damn smart and pretty damn obsessed with the details if we spend a decade discussing things on this forum. if y’all watched film as much as I do, and some of you might, I’m sure you’d all feel like you really “get it” too. The more I understand about football the more I love it tbh.

This is so true, I mean for not being a casual fan there is so much stuff I still don't get.

Yeah baseball is the easiest to get as base level.

Basketball has subjective penalties and shit. Hockey no one tries to understand. Football is complicated.

If that's the case than I'd feel anyone could be a coach lol.

I'd have to go with baseball too. I mean there's different shifts/rotations/etc. that casual fans might not get. But in the end, baseballs pretty damn easy to understand as a fan haha

I'd say Basketball is the easiest. Approaches, and how to attack the strike zone and how one pitch sets up another pitch which sets up a later at bat etc etc is pretty interesting stuff in baseball.

    The rivalry is back on

There’s so much baseball strategy like the opener or the shift that the casual fan doesn’t get at all

Also the idea of trading well known players for prospects is somehow foreign to the casual fan

Oh yeah i'm sure like 98% of people who watch hockey have no idea what icing/offsides/etc.. is it's just vroom vroom big hit puck in goal

Yup. Watching and learning is so easy, but learning to actually play is a whole different story.
