Let’s be real Mack is the piece that made the Bears “12-4” competitive. Nothing about the rest of the team says “12-4” to me. No other position group. But that pass rush, LED by Mack plus Floyd and Goldman is what put them over the top and allowed an above-average at best offense to dominate at times and win 12 games.

 

And without Mack that ain’t an elite pass rush either. Think about how many plays he gets double teamed even if he doesn’t put up stats (which is rare) - how much that opens up the rest of the defense.

How many times he got in there fast against the pass and gave the DBs the upper hand.

How many times he stood up a blocker in the run game and forced the RB RIGHT into Roquan Smith

There are extreme differences between the two though, Mack was holding out and basically only playing if he got a contract RIGHT THEN. Both those things bring down his value and make him available if the Raiders are not paying him.

Wentz can very well be unavailable because the Eagles hold all the cards, whereas in the Raiders situation, Khalil Mack held a LOT of the cards and STILL fetched the value he got. In a vacuum, Mack really might be worth more than Wentz in a trade. But we're not in a vacuum, we're in a situation where the Eagles have an upper hand on other teams that the Raiders did not have, and as a result Wentz definitely fetches more than Mack.

 

Yeah I gotcha. I was mainly saying that I don’t think picking Q early alone fixes that line. People point to the whole “oh 4 of the guys were picked in the top 40” thing, and sure that means they’re talented, but also 1 was picked by Grigson, 1 was picked by Polian, and Grigs supplemented that line during his tenure with big ticket FAs and mid-draft guys and that line was still ass city until this year

 

I hope not hahaha. It's possible given his contract is almost up, but I haven't heard anything about that. But yeah, I hope not, @Randall Mentzos and I both agree that Mercilus has panned out much better than Clowney, would much rather Clowney hit FA than lose Mercilus.

 

I want Clowney so bad. His hometown is like 10 mins from Charlotte. I think we’d have a decent chance of getting him if he becomes available.

I'd like to see Clowney on the Panthers, I like him a lot and want him to work well but with having Watt and Mercilus playing how they're playing it's hard for me to justify keeping him. But I know if he goes somewhere else he's gonna ball out, just don't think he will in Houston.

I see them being good at gap discipline and tackling, but struggling to get prrsssure

I really hope Kris Richard isn't poached from our team. Jerry, give him the official defensive coordinator title and money, move Marinelli to an assistant defensive coordinator (which is what he's been this year anyways), and let him continue helping draft and develop this great top defense!
