I think the idea that the Eagles can plug and play also means that they can just let Foles hit free agency+get a comp pick instead and keep the younger player over him, so they're gonna make that price tag as high as possible for the younger player

You need both. Great QB don’t succeed without a pass rush on the other side. This year it’s Mahomes and Brees benefitting from a high sack volume defense giving them the ball closer to the red zone. Manning never did shit in the playoffs until the year the Colts had a top 3 defense with Freeney and Mathis (2006) and the year the Broncos were the same way. Same with Brees in the past. Russell Wilson, Ben Roethlisberger hasn’t been as competitive in the post season without elite pass rush and defense, etc Even Brady mostly won in good-defense years for the Pats.

The times when shitty QB win it’s true too - Flacco and Eli benefitted from elite pass rushes as well. So did Brad Johnson on TB and Trent Dilfer in BAL.

Rodgers may be the only QB who can just offense his way to victory lol. And that “pass aggressively all the time” mentality is also what led to their demise.

A reminder that the Eagles were the team that traded away the walking hospital bill Sam Bradford for a 1st and a conditional 4th that could've become a 2nd so Wentz is definitely gonna be a good amount more than that.

Yeah, both is ideal but if I'm given the option of having a fringe top ten quarterback or one of the best defensive players in the league, I'll take the quarterback every time.

Perspective - the Jags have one now. The Chiefs have the other.

But having Mack is one of the two primary pieces you need to win a super bowl. QB is more important objectively but when it’s a top 10-11 QB with injury issues versus a top 1-2 pass rusher I think the value is close.

You dont need Mack. You dont need Wentz. You need a coach, son

No, wrong, the Chiefs have both.

Justin Houston, Chris Jones, and Dee Ford alone finished with over 30 sacks this year. They have an amazing pass rush. Better than ours right now even though their defense’s back 7 sucks

Without that they wouldn’t be 12-4 even with Mahomes playing so well

I don't like the idea that there's any set formula. You can go so many different routes to win games in the NFL, it's all just execution.

Apologies because I steered it away from Mack/Wentz specifically and morphed it into a general question. For those two in particular, it would be a tough decision and I wouldn't fault anyone either way because of Wentz's injuries.

37.5 sacks between those three players in fact.

    Chris - 15.5
    Dee - 13
    Houston - 9

I'm too lazy to look this up and make sure I'm right, but it feels like the Eagles control the clock a lot better with Foles than Wentz so it could be that the defense doesn't get as tired

This is such a silly take considering QB is a much more important postion.

I just think Super Bowl teams without top 10 pass rush generally don’t exist. There are even fewer outliers in that category than when you discuss bad QB winning Super Bowls.

  20. Max_123

Doesn't that somewhat contradict that pass rush is that critically important then? Because they do in fact have a great rush, but the defense is still ass. (Also looking at you Texans) You need to have a very balanced defense in terms of rushing the passer and your back 7.

That's why it worked for the Bears because they have talent all over, same for those contending Broncos teams.

Like yeah there’s no set formula but at the least there is a backbone. You need a good coach, a great pass rush (even if you have an elite QB) and generally a great to elite QB depending on how dominant the defense is

  22. This. The Ringer article I posted yesterday explained it well. There’s no one way to do things. It’s the ability to adapt and evolve that is crucial. The Chargers defensive performance and the Seahawks offensive performance this past weekend are perfect examples on opposite sides of the spectrum.

This is entirely true, and you can have a top 10 pass rush without having a top 5/generational pass rusher as well. There are so many different ways a pass rush can be generated that it's hard to value one player who rushes the passer at such a high level for just ANY team.

  25. Randall Mentzos

When you hit a mothafucka, you hit that mothafucka Prestigious

No because even if your defense is bad in terms of yards, randomly ending drives early due to sacks and forcing more sack / fumbles gives you just enough push to make Mahomes / Brees impossible to keep up with.

They get put in easier scoring position due to this, and they get the ball right after they just scored sometimes and get to go up by 14 in a matter of minutes. THAT is what makes the Chiefs / Saints dangerous.

Meanwhile QB who have to entirely carry the team from the 20 yard line repeatedly rarely succeed in the playoffs and tend to run out of gas against good defenses if they continually lose the field position / time of possession battle
