Hard to game plan around Marcus "questionable to return" Mariota

 

Counterpoint: The Titans hired Mike Vrabel to be their HC after he took the Texans defense from #1 to #32 in his first year as DC (this was not due to injuries either - that defense looked bad from day 1 of the season). When he took over the Titans, the defense became top 3 in PAPG and the team had a winning record.

 

I think thats why they hired him tbh lol

 

Certainly nothing is for sure, much like drafting, but it just seems like an odd hire looking at his history / numbers.

I do like that it’s not a retread of some old guy who’s had 3-5 chances.

 

I think it's just easy to forget how much head coaches do outside of play design/playcalling (I know I'm guilty of it)

 

Teams are seeing these offensive HCs and younger HCs have success and they are trying to duplicate it. We will see some succeed and some fail. But a lot teams are playing catch up and are following the trend of the league. While there are exceptions we are seeing the old guard style of play become obsolete and "outside the box" scheming rise. I don't mean to pull a Colin Cowherd, but the league's generational evolution is the same as the generational evolution in society. As the "old-timers" phase out the younger minds begin to implement their ideas.

And I'm not even saying you have go all-in on offense. And I'm not saying smash-mouth/defensive football can't win. My overall point is that those style teams still have to adapt to the new philosophies of the league that we are seeing in game-management. We are seeing more decisions that used to be thought of as risks now be considered preferred decisions.

 

Look at the performance of the 2015 Chiefs offense under Doug Pederson. Don't think you can judge LaFleur just based on one year's total offense stats

I think the reason we are seeing more success in offensive HCs right now is because the league was defensive-driven for quite awhile. They had to adapt and find new ways to succeed. They are the ones who had to think outside the box and develop their approach. I think we are starting to see the result of that now.
