Of course he is but do the Texans need another good safety? Would much rather take a top 10 corner while having garbage at CB than take a top 3 safety while having 3 good safeties

I Would say whoever the best interior OLineman is this year but I don't think that would move the needle as much as Mack

Sometimes I wonder what it's like in the alternate reality where the Panthers took Von Miller over Cam and then tanked for Luck the following season.

 

The worst part is, if you dig up the archive of that Absolutepunk.net 2014 NFL draft thread...

...you would see me just all caps screaming "MACK. GIVE ME MACK!!" after the Rams selected Greg Robinson.

I may have been the biggest excuse-maker for Blake Bortles the last few years but in the 2014 offseason I had to talk myself into him. It took me weeks to get over us not drafting the best defensive player I'd seen in a long time.

 

Yeah I remember leading up to that draft that you completely called Khalil Mack being as amazing as he is, and convinced me that I wanted Mack at #1 more than Clowney but would be happy either way

 

I will never see a better defender than prime Watt, that was an absolutely incredible stretch that will never be matched by anyone, ever

 

at least we drafted the best CB I've seen in a long time

Ramsey can't make our team good by himself, but he's like a shortcut to getting there. Having a lockdown corner is, in my opinion, the most vital piece to building an elite defense.

Quality pass rushers are the most "important" piece in terms of affecting the game, but they are also more abundant and it also seems like a top DC can "coach up" pass rushers more reliably than CBs. A shutdown corner is gold because it's just so rare. And because they also erase huge chunks of strategy / gameplanning from the other team.

 

I'd take a top pass rusher over a top corner tbh. You put a shit player across from JJ Watt and Watt is still Watt. You put a shit corner opposite Ramsey? Guess who gets ignored for an entire game?

 

I never want to see another defensive player win MVP after 2014

 

I don’t disagree with this but I think it misses the bigger point that you’re not going to win with the Jaguars’ pound the ball and play elite D strategy without just about everything going your way. Add Vic Fangio or whoever the DC flavor of the month is to that defense and you’re not gonna change that. You’re probably better than a 4 win team, but the fact that this isn’t a nearly perfect season in terms of those luck factors (injuries, TO differential, etc) means that team isn’t doing all that much regardless of the coach

If you have a unicorn coach/QB combo like Billy B and Touchdown Tom, sure, it’s that simple.

 

Yeah but also, Ramsey is taking away a lot of teams' best offensive player by himself. No gameplanning required. He just automatically takes away the best weapon some teams have to attack you with. And in effect he takes away almost every play intended to get the ball ato that player. He literally shrinks the opposing team's playbook.
