Only one of the semis was close, so my argument being that only 3 of the 4 teams were competitive enough for a championship so keeping it at four total makes sense. We haven’t had a situation where there are enough competitive teams to justify an expanded playoff. At most, we’ve had 3 teams that had a legitimate shot at winning, and usually just two.
For the vast majority of the existence of college football, it's been more than just two elite teams. We really just gonna act like we wouldnt be flipping out with excitement six years ago if they did this? It was more leveled out before and we will get back to that.
Also we gotta fix the schedules the best teams you play should be the playoff teams but they shouldn't be your ONLY tough games. They need to adopt something similar to the NFL. Say week one, ACC #1 vs. SEC #1, Big 12 #2 vs. Pac-12 #2, etc...
Looking back to 2000, only 07, 10, and 14 were seasons where you could argue there are more than 4 teams who deserve a shot. By and large, the overwhelming majority of seasons had only 2-3 elite teams. I think four is the sweet spot for a playoff as far as “deserving” teams go. If we want to expand because we are college football fans and just want more games, then sure, but to make the argument that legitimate contenders are being left out doesn’t make sense.
So far have we had a year where we felt like the top four teams made it? Maybe one? Definitely not this year
No, but my take is that has to do with poor seeding moreso than number of teams involved. I do think that, generally, the championship game itself winds up being what it should be.
This is entirely misleading given that per 247sports, Bama had the No. 1 recruiting class in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 and then fifth in 2018 and are first in 2019. Players aren't going to stop going to other places because Alabama only has so many scholarships (and still consistently over sign every year). They literally get to cherry pick the very best of the high school talent every single year.
Yea, you get the two best teams and the NCAA makes a shit ton of money pretending there's tons of competition and that's not even including the billion pointless bowl games
