He holds up the entire free agency process. Most teams/agents/players will not make any moves until the biggest domino falls and then everyone goes from there. It makes sense for him to do it quickly if he's going to try and attract other free agents to join him somewhere, or for a team to free up cap space/make moves to make other pieces fit.

Jalen Rose made a somewhat interest point this morning about staying with Cleveland one more year and then teaming up with Kawhi in LA next year because the Spurs won't trade him to LA anyway, but especially not if LBJ is there.

i was like, "yeah, maybe... but why suffer through another year carrying Cleveland when you could be with a better team in LA right away and getting them ready for a big run next year once they know how to play with LBJ and he knows who he wants off the team."

and then i thought - my god if that happens what is the point of the rest of the teams / season

As I've stated all year long, I don't think LeBron will leave, but IF he does leave, it'd be more beneficial for the Cavs for him to leave this summer and not next summer (in terms of rebuilding). Leaving at any point would obviously be detrimental to the Cavs franchise/city of Cleveland, however it'd be far more detrimental if he leaves in 2019 as opposed to now.

    Here's why:

    * Cavs would be good enough in the 2018-2019 season to lose their top 10 protected 2019 draft pick (which would obviously be a top 3-5 pick if LeBron leaves this year). If he leaves in 2019, Cavs are left with no draft picks at all.

    * Love can opt out of his contract in 2019. If LeBron leaves this summer, Cavs can work to trade him for a future draft pick, assets, young talent, etc. between now and the trade deadline. If LeBron leaves next summer, Cavs will likely lose Love for nothing.

    * Should LeBron only stay for one more year, the Cavs will likely sell the farm this year for one final shot at a championship (which we all know - as currently constructed - ain't happening), so let's say the Cavs trade Sexton, Cedi and future pick for Kemba Walker...then LeBron leaves in 2019 and so does Kemba. And we're left with no draft picks, no trade assets and no young talent.

Having all that said, I don't see him opting in or signing another 1+1 deal. I think at this point of his career, whatever move he makes may be his final contract. He'll be 34 in December. If he makes the decision this summer to stay in Cleveland, that to me tells me he wants his family to remain in Cleveland.

I think LeBron will still do a relatively short contract with an option year.

  22. I don't know why he's locking himself into that being the only way to build a team.

Windhorst was just on ESPN Cleveland and laughed at the Space Jam announcement rumor. Said definitely not true.

He also said there’s a reason LeBron will make decision before July 4, but wouldn’t give details as to why.
