Marks was saying that on November 26th because it was reasonable at that point. We had more flexibility in 2019-20 because we had JR, Hill and Korver set to make $41.2 million that could turn into just $8.3 million dead cap by cutting them.

They already acted on that by getting 8 picks and the $34 million added through these trades, which Gilbert okayed because they're still barely under luxury tax for 2018-19. I'm not saying Gilbert will stop doing that in 2019-20 with the expirings we have then, but, as Pluto said, they're not at a point where he wants them going over the luxury tax line. They kept JR at the deadline because trading him for guaranteed cash for 2019-20 would've made June much more frantic by removing the option to just cut a guy to get under the luxury tax for next season. Hell, it could have even pushed them over that $23,000 they had to avoid it this season.

They could still trade JR, but only if they can get another team to absorb one of the other expirings into open cap space as well. Realistically, trading JR makes sense for teams trying to clear cap space, but the Cavs needing to get someone to also take on one of our other expirings is unlikely as teams have a stellar free agency coming up.
