Bill Simmons: "Does any team really want Davis? If he couldn't do it alone with the Pelicans, how is he going to do it with any other squad? I'd rather have Tatum."

It sounds like the Knicks hardly listened to any offers. Not to mention the deal may have been pretty much done by the time they released the story about him being unhappy in the meeting. They're so delusional they basically used him as sweetener to get Dallas to take their bad contracts and send back some expiring contracts.

I disagree with just about all of this.

First, the reporting I’ve seen from guys like Marc Stein has been that the Knicks have shopped KP for a while. So they knew the offers. Apparently, the Mavs have been obsessed with KP since before he was drafted. Stein said that every time the Mavs called NY, they would ask about KP. I would guess they made the best offer.

Second, this was not a salary dump by any means and to label it as such just ignores the facts. The Knicks received three legit assets (two first round picks and DSJ) on top of getting to dump 2 horrible contracts in exchange for KP, an oft injured player who didn’t want to be there.

That’s not a bad return at all as far as I’m concerned. Of course it’s a gamble, but the bet they are making is this:

To keep KP and open up a max slot for, say, KD, the Knicks would need to offload Lee. The cost of that was likely a first round pick.

So, is it better to trade your pick, and then roll with KP and KD. Or, would you rather keep your pick, gain two more firsts and DSJ as a fall back or to flip for vets, and then tell KD he can pick his running mates (including one other max guy). They are betting it’s the latter.

They might be wrong, but I also don’t think the Knicks hurt themselves here. Even if it’s Kemba and J.B., they still have this year’s pick, Knox, DSJ, and two future first to use as trade chips to fill out the roster. That’s a solid playoff team in the East.

Those two firsts and DSJ are coming in handy right now.

Knicks can give up the farm (picks, DSJ, Knox), get AD, and then have two open slots available.

still think the Lakers are pulling this off, but it would be cool if it was the Clips instead

(or the knicks obviously, but i mean, cmon)
