So these new NCAA rules are a mixed bag of half measures.

1) Schools will have to pay tuition, fees, and books of basketball players who leave school and then return to the same school to finish their degree. That’s cool.

2) High school seniors can hire an agent, but only certain seniors identified by USA Basketball. Weirdly limiting.

3) You can return to school if you go undrafted. But, as the rule is written, that only applies if you are invited to the combine. And, as of right now, the combine limits who is invited. So, again, that’s weirdly limiting.

 

So basically you have to be a top 100 player to get any of these things, meh

 

As a Cavs fan, and someone who has to travel to my wife's family parties and then to my family parties on Xmas, I hated playing on Christmas Day. So, there's a silver lining in LeBron leaving...

The NCAA shouldn't have anything to do with whether you can go from high school to the draft

That’s technically true. Whose eligible for the nba draft is an NBA rule. But, of course, the rule was created to protect the NCAA and have a completetly free farm system.

Under these “proposed”’ rule changes, if the NBA allows high school kids to enter the draft without a gap year, then the NCAA would, essentially, decide what seniors were allowed to hire an agent. And, any agent they did hire would be scrutinized because the rule only allows for certain services to be performed.

Any senior not chosen could not hire an agent without sacrificing their eligibility. In that way, it thrusts the NCAA into these kids lives further than they already are.
