The Spurs actually had no leverage to get much more or dump contracts. The Raptors probably refused to give up more than that or take on more salary for a player they knew was a rental and which, almost certainly, the entire plan is to let him go after this season. Taking on more salary defeats the entire purpose of this trade for them. It's "one more shot and then we're done."

also, demar + lamarcus makes a lot more sense than kawhi + lamarcus

 

Spurs lost leverage by taking their time with this trade. Lakers were ready to unload young assets and they decided to wait. I never understood why they let this drag out. DeRozan is nice but I’d rather have those young pieces.

I like it for both teams, but it is a huge risk for the Raptors. I don’t see Kawhi re-signing with them.

 

I think the point is they were likely to rebuild if they didn't get anywhere this year anyways, so they figured might as well go for it

and its not like losing Poeltl or a late 1st is that big of a deal

 

Agreed I can understand the reasoning for sure - Toronto needed a culture change and this is one way to kick start it even if they did Demar dirty

I think if kawhi is willing to sign you try to dump Lowry and use that money to try to sign/trade for someone like kemba, build a team around him with that.

 

I'm fairly confident the Celtics were offering like, Rozier and a Pick.
