Didn’t Turnover’s Good Nature come out in 2017, it says so on Apple Music but I didn’t see it on Wikipedia when working on my list
This is one of my favorite years of music ever (or to be more specific the time period of April 2017 - April 2018) 1. Paramore: After Laughter 2. Lorde: Melodrama 3. The Maine: Lovely Little Lonely 4. Lana Del Rey: Lust For Life 5. Taylor Swift: reputation 6. Tyler, the Creator: Scum Fuck Flower Boy 7. Bleachers: Gone Now 8. Charli XCX: Pop 2 9. Phoebe Bridgers: Stranger In the Alps 10. Vince Staples: Big Fish Theory Also love: The Menzingers: After the Party SZA: Ctrl Kendrick Lamar: Damn. Father John Misty: Pure Comedy Jay Som: Everybody Works Julien Baker: Turn Out the Lights Fleet Foxes: Crack-Up Brockhampton: Saturation Albums Charli XCX: Number 1 Angel Tove Lo: Blue Lips Queens of the Stone Age: Villains Manchester Orchestra: A Black Mile to the Surface Turnover: Good Nature John Mayer: The Search for Everything Kesha: Rainbow Jason Isbell and the 400: The Nashville Sound Vagabon: Infinite Worlds
Don't worry everyone, I'm here to save the thread and even further confuse the voting! 1. The Menzingers - After The Party Went back and forth about what to put here, but the truth is that I still remember where I was when I clicked play on this album for the first time. This album is exactly what I wanted it to be. Poignant and with a larger production than previous Menz albums, plus Tom's strongest collection of songs, IMO. 2. Charly Bliss - Guppy This album is also very important to me. I was fortunate enough to meet the band while they were touring this album, which cemented this as one of my favorite power-pop releases in a long time. At least until their next album! 3. Bleachers - Gone Now A little rockier than the first Bleachers album, this dominated my listening in 2017. Wherever this version of Bleachers went, I would please like it to return for the next album. Honorable Mentions Paramore - After Laughter Pretty handily my favorite Paramore album. Love the sound they achieved here and arguably one of their most consistent releases. Kendrick Lamar - DAMN. I was actually pretty lukewarm on this when it was released. I thought the beats were regressive compared to TPAB and the lyrics more simplified. Makes sense then that it was a massive hit. I like it a lot more in retrospect and especially after Mr. Morale not really exciting me. Dua Lipa - Dua Lipa An excellent start to one of our biggest pop stars. Partner - In Search of Lost Time A very underrated Canadian duo with big hooks and even bigger guitar solos. The Maine - Lovely Little Lonely Great album! New Found Glory - Makes Me Sick The best New Found Glory album since at least Coming Home and for me they'll likely never top it again. Lorde - Melodrama This is my favorite Lorde album and nearly cracked my top 3. MUTEMATH - Play Dead This is my favorite MUTEMATH album, solely because it's the only one I was a present fan for. Charli XCX - Pop 2 This album was definitely ahead of its time and is very good, but I don't worship it like an entire faction of the internet does. BROCKHAMPTON - Saturation, Saturation II, Saturation III A thrilling start to a tumultuous group. Phoebe Bridgers - Stranger In the Alps This almost cracked my top 3 as well, but the back half falls off a bit for me. Saw her in a 500 cap in 2018, seeing her this summer in a 3,000 cap. A Giant Dog - Toy Underrated glam band from Austin that has yet to drop a new collection of songs. Andrew McMahon In the Wilderness - Zombies On Broadway A superbly underrated pop album and arguably Andrew's most consistent since EIT. Others Superfood - Bambino Underrated Dirty Hit release. Dave Hause - Bury Me In Philly My fav/I think the most consistent Dave Hause album. Acceptance - Colliding By Design Not what people expected this band to return with, but I like it. Foo Fighters - Concrete and Gold Meh. Some good songs, some not good songs. The Regrettes - Feel Your Feelings Fool! A peppy start to this solid pop band. Sparks - Hippopotamus One of the more consistent late-era Sparks records. Gorillaz - Humanz Not nearly as good as I thought it was when it was released. Some stand-out tracks for sure, but wow a lot of this is forgettable and some of the best material made the deluxe, but not the album proper. The Flatliners - Inviting Light I know this band changed their sound or whatever, but it works for me. Hot Water Music - Light It Up Idk, another HWM album that sounds like HWM. Japandroids - Near to the Wild Heart of Life Disappointing. Still like a few tracks though. Wheeler Walker Jr. - Ol' Wheeler Exactly as advertised, with slightly bigger production. LINKIN PARK - One More Light I don't like this album, but the title track is great and super sad to listen back to. Weezer - Pacific Daydream Mexican Fender rules, then there's like 3-4 tracks I don't like, and then the rest of the album is solid. Poppy - Poppy.Computer A super weird and cookie cutter pop album that I admit to listening to way too much of. Betty Who - The Valley Betty Who's big swing for fame. It works for me although it didn't blow her up. Queens of the Stone Age - Villains I liked this one a ton when it came out, but it hasn't stuck with me. Portugal. The Man - Woodstock It's crazy that this band that used to release an album a year hasn't followed up arguably their weakest album in over 5 years. Some good songs on here though.

Brockhampton - Saturation I - III 7. Charly Bliss - Guppy 8. Kendrick Lamar - DAMN. 9. Los Campesinos! - Sick Scenes 10. Paramore - After Laughter One of my very favourite years for music. Wow, there were a lot of good albums in 2017 1. Caracara - Summer Megalith 2. The National - Sleep Well Beast 3. The Collection - Listen to the River Sorority Noise - You’re Not as ____ as You Think Manchester Orchestra - A Black Mile to the Surface The War On Drugs - A Deeper Understanding Sinai Vessel - Brokenlegged Bent Knee - Land Animal Gang of Youths - Go Farther in Lightness Brand New - Science Fiction Lowland Hum - Thin Ratboys - GN The World Is… - Always Foreign Julien Baker - Turn Out the Lights Wild Pink - S/T Charli XCX - Pop 2 Big Thief - Capacity Oso Oso - The Yunahon Mixtape Sylvan Esso - What Now Alt J - Relaxer Prawn - Run Smidley - S/T
01) MANCHESTER ORCHESTRA - A Black Mile To The Surface Manchester makes their grand opus and best release, equal parts heavy while also being devastatingly dramatic 02) THE NATIONAL - Sleep Well Beast Straying from the "Dad rock" tag, The National toughen up their sound while still sounding morose 03) PARAMORE - After Laughter Rock bottom has never sounded so shiny 04) BRAND NEW - Science Fiction A fitting end for one of the most complicated bands from this scene 05) THE WAR ON DRUGS - A Deeper Understanding A more majestic and expansive follow-up to their breakthrough 06) FATHER JOHN MISTY - Pure Comedy FJM was in full on menace mode with the press with this record, thankfully the music backed up his antics 07) QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE - Villians One of the grooviest in a long series of groovy records from this band 08) THE XX - I See You Embracing more electronic sound likely due to Jamie XX's debut's success, this may have been their swan song without us realizing 08) SPOON - Hot Thoughts Britt Daniel gives us yet another collection of silky-smoothe R&B-influenced indie rock 09) BLEACHERS - Gone Now Always interesting how Jack Antanoff's own songs are weirder are most quirky than what he does with big pop artists 10) LORDE - Melodrama Speaking of Antanoff, him and Lorde made the best pop album of 2017 11) MUNA - About U A close runner up to Lorde's record, Muna's debut is full of big hooks all about the struggles of being young and queer 12) ALVVAYS - Antisocialites Note-perfect indie pop. Shame we haven't heard from this band since. 13) SYLVAN ESSO - What Now More excitable follow-up from this electro-pop couple 14) WEEZER - Pacific Daydream Second in Weezer's beach trilogy and a nice melding of their 90's power-pop with their 10's electronic-influenced pop 15) BONOBO - Migration DJ/Producer focusing on global-sounding landscapes 16) SAMPHA - Process "Alternative R&B" at least according to what critics say but there is no mistakign this is a fantastic debut that still hasn't been properly followed up 17) PORTUGAL THE MAN - Woodstock A worldwide global smash single from a long running and with 9 other tracks that also stand up well 18) FOSTER THE PEOPLE - Sacred Hearts Club Coming off a divisive sophomore pivot, Foster The People start writing memorable choruses again 19) LANA DEL REY - Lust For Life This is now a memory-holed album due to LDR's prolific output but still a great majestic piece of old-fashioned American songwriter pop 20) PHOENIX - Ti Amo Coming off an indifferent response to Bankrupt, Phoenix expand in various directions for an all-around well-crafted recort 21) HAIM - Something To Tell You A worthy follow-up to a game-changing debut 22) KASABIAN - For Crying Out Loud Last record (at least for now) with their original singer, Kasabian continues to prove why they play stadiums in Europe 23) BECK - Colors After winning a grammy for a more morose offering, Beck gets back to the up-tempo numbers 24) CUT COPY - Haiku From Zero And speaking of up-tempo numbers made for festival fields. 25) NEW PORNOGRAPHERS - Whiteout Conditions The amount of songwriting talent existing in this band simply means they cannot put out a bad record and this one stands amongst their finest with an extra emphasis on shiny synths 26) PHOEBE BRIDGERS - Stranger In The Alps A precursor to her modern day dominance, Stranger In The Alps is a fantastic debut with beautiful sounding songs full of humor 27) LINKIN PARK - One More Light Originally viewed as a "pop sellout" record but now unfortunately taken for what it is, the final chapter in a struggling man's life 28) JAPANDROIDS - Near To The Wild Heart Of Life While not quite reaching the highs of Celebration Rock, this was the practical next step for Japandroids 29) LONDON GRAMMAR - Truth Is A Beautiful Thing More subdued and sexy indie R&B by way of the UK 30) DEPECHE MODE - Spirit This may be the last Depeche Mode album given Andy Flethcher's death and, while they may not have hit the same highs as they did in the 80's/90's, Depeche Mode has never gone through the motions in making music
This year was just too damn good. It was so hard to not give Lovely Little Lonely or Stranger in the Alps or Guppy one of my top spots, but the competition was too fierce.

Don't really have any favorite albums from this year so not going to rank, but did want to say... I couldn't get into Zombies on Broadway for the longest time. Still can't completely. The poppiness of it/how it sounded like everything else on alt rock radio at the time slightly annoyed me. I eventually came around to the sound and don't mind the poppy singles anymore. So Close is probably my favorite of them, Fire Escape is okay too. My favorite song is probably Island Radio. Didn't really click with me until I heard it live on the Upside Down Flowers tour, but loved it then and really got into it. I do need to go back and give it more listens to see if more songs click with me now. I ended up liking Upside Down Flowers a lot more when that came out. If I wanted to participate and give them any points, my favorite whole album from the year is probably Science Fiction. It'll forever have a bitter taste because of what we learned only a few months after it dropped. Remembering all the hype and then enjoying it so much and then finding out what a scumbag he had been was a kick in the teeth. But much like TDAG, it came out at the right time in my life as I was still struggling with anxiety pretty bad, contemplating leaving teaching or at least getting out of the classroom and into a different role. So a lot of the songs on there really fit the mood for me at the time, especially Same Logic/Teeth and that feeling of being a burden on everyone around you and pretending to be okay and etc. Definitely helped me get through that 2017/2018 school year. Well, with a few months gap in there where I couldn't really bring myself it listen to it much at the time while I processed. Another full album I didn't get into but like some of the songs off of was After Laughter. Though the one I really only come back to these days is Hard Times. I love the vibe and the 80s music video and etc. It is also one of my soon to be 3 year olds favorite songs now so lol Also for some reason I thought California came out in 2017 and not 2016. But I was super psyched for that album as one of my favorite singers/song writers from one of my favorite bands was joining Blink. The results ended up pretty close to what I expected. It some places it felt like they were trying to "force" the "old blink" sound, but it still generally worked. Bored To Death was enormous. Cynical was a good way to start it off. Los Angeles was one of my early favorites. Sober had a killer catchy chorus, still don't know how that didn't end up as a single. Home Is Such A Lonley Place was decent. San Diego was probably my favorite off the album. Then from the deluxe addition I really liked Misery and 6/8. A few of the other ones have had their moments for me as well. Sorry, woulda wrote this all in the 2016 thread but oops.
