this is missing a lot of pre-2017 stuff (mostly prog) but has all of the 2017 stuff. this will probably be it for me this year & i'm mostly cool with that now. i think i've exhausted most of the enjoyment from the genres i was hugely into and now it's time to branch out and get into other stuff. also realizing that despite how much new music i used to listen to, only a few new records each year have made a lasting impact post-eoty and that focusing intensively on consuming new albums isn't the most rewarding mode of music discovery for me. don't think i will keep a list next year, won't beat myself up about not seeking out new music or not keeping up with particular scenes, and will instead try to be more organic in my music discovery and not constrain myself to a particular genre or era or whatever is currently getting hyped up in certain corners of the music community.

apart from Who Bit the Moon i got so much more enjoyment from movies than from music this year and i'd be happy if that trend continues
